How long would 50 lbs of dog food last for a small maltese dog?

thanks if you could tell me!!! planning on getting a dog, and if you have ANY training tips, PLEASE tell me :) And i woud feed the dog 3 times a day right?

It would go stale before you would use all of it. I got a Chihuahua in July, and I bought 15 lbs of puppy food then.I still have about 4 lbs left. So it would be better to buy smaller bags unless you can store the food in air-tight containers in a cool, dark place. And yes,3 or 4 small meals a day.

Edit: Toy breeds, especailly puppies, need 3-4 small meals a day to keep their blood sugar up and make sure that they get enough calories. When they are old enough to be spayed or neutered ( 6 months old),you can reduce the feedings to 2 a day.

it would go STALE long before such a small dog would eat it all.

The largest bag I’d get for such small dog would be a 20 pd bag, and that’s probably pushing it. A 20 pd bag of dog food lasts my 15 pd Crested about a month and a half.

Buy smaller bags, you dont want it to get stale. 50 lbs is long time for small dog. I would only feed twice, but check info for your breed.

Too long to stay fresh. Get a smaller bag and for a Maltese, I would say about 3/4 cup twice a day or 1 1/2 once a day.

You need to get a book or read up online with it. They are small dogs and usually only 2x per day is fine. 50 lbs would last a REALLY long time, but it may also spoil in the meantime. I would suggest a smaller bag like a #25 or #15. Get the dog young, hopefully with some training already – like house trained and get it to a good obedience school so you can learn how to be the dog’s best friend too.

    An EXTREMELY long time.

I buy a 15 pound bag of food every 1.5-2 months for my TWO 13-14lb dogs. For a single little 4-7lb Maltese, I would think a 50lb bag would easily last a REALLY long time. It would be LONG stale by the time your dog actually ate it all, even if you stored it carefully. The biggest bag I would buy for a dog that size is 15-20 pounds, and even a bag that size will last for months and months.

Yes, here’s a training tip, buy one that’s house trained. It is hell and whatever s worse than that to clean up every day, and it also leaves your house smelling like ****. But to answer your question, probably a few months. 4-6 months approximately, depending on the dog. I have a german shepherd / lab, and she eats a bag like that in half a month. so to do the math, if my dog weighs 70 pounds and your dog probably will weigh like 15 pounds, then 4-6 months is a fair estimate. But it would probably go stale though. Try storing it in the cellar or a colder room. About how often you should feed it, it depends. Some people tell you to leave the dog bowl with food empty and refill it 3 times a day, but that’s to prevent overeating. Most dogs instinctively know that, though. In my opinion, you should leave a bigger bowl full of food out there for the dog’s discretion. If you notice it overeating once or twice and getting sick or throwing up, then do the three times a day thing. If not, then leave it there. Dogs love to snack throuought the day =)
Also make sure it ALWAYS has a big bowl of water ready. It is impossible for a dog to over-drink, so make sure to give it lots of water.

    Hope this helped =)

Too long. Once a bag is opened, it begins to lose it’s nutrients and freshness. The oils would go rancid and the nutrients would be gone at least half way through the bag. You should only open a bag of food big enough for your dog to eat in less than a month. So for a Maltese, you should by a 5 lb. bag of food and at most a 15 lb.

I think it would last about 3 weeks or more. I have about 4 little maltese and they have a bag that lasts for 1 month to around 3 weeks.
