This is Printz Alba. He doesn’t belong to me, but he is staying in our place for this weekend.

They told me that he is a maltese, and I can see that he is one big baby maltese -he is 5 months old, but already bigger than Snowy and Crystal- He is just soooooooooo CUTE, hugable and fun to be with. My malts get along with him.

Enjoy!!

What are the best ways to bathe & care for my Maltese dog-Her skin and coat?

April 14, 2010 - 5:24 pm 2 Comments

She is small-4 lbs. and get dirty outside. I hate to continually use dog shampoos on her. Can I use human hair conditioner w/o shampooing her to keep her skin from drying out? She has gotten fleas from the outside dog-I feel so bad for her. I bathe her is warm water and conditioner to get rid of the fleas. What can I do to make her comfortable while I battle this flea problem? We have used Frontline Plus on her all summer, yet now she has fleas! What should I do? What about mineral oil to smother the fleas? I don’t want to irrirate her skin, and I love to hold her. But I don’t want fleas myself. I just want to make her comfortable and happy! HELP…..any advice will be appreciated!

I’m so sorry for you and your pup. Fleas are miserable, for both of you!

First, Frontline Plus must be used year- round. Fleas are everywhere. You can also use Advantix or Revolution- both are good as well.

Second, try getting a soap- free shampoo from your vet. You can get one that is hypoallergenic and very mild to her skin. If you bathe frequently, soap- free shampoo is a must:) My maltese/yorkie mix gets more baths than normal, we love the shampoo!

Lastly, try tying up her pretty hair, or getting her a cute shirt/sweater. She won’t get a sdirty outside and when she comes in, you can simply wipe her paws, take off her shirt and she is good to cuddle with on the couch!

Best to both of you:)

Is there anyway to stop my Maltese dog from nipping?

April 12, 2010 - 7:20 pm 12 Comments

My Maltese started nipping since he was 2 months old. Now he is a year old. He nips when he wants attention or when he wants to play. It is starting to hurt. I can’t take it anymore!

Wow, I have 2 maltese and mine are definitely demanding, but they don’t nip like that. My boy barks at me until I pick him up or let him out or feed him, or whatever it is that he wants. My little girl is pretty much content to be next to me, whatever I’m doing. It sounds like your dog has learned that he gets what he wants if he nips, just like my little boy does when he barks. The only thing I can think of is to loudly tell him no when he does it, put him in his crate for a time-out, and then when he comes out, try to give him positive reinforcement by playing with him and giving him treats. If you keep giving him what he wants, he’ll keep on doing it. You’re going to have to be patient. It is hard to change a dog’s behavior at anything over a few months old.

How do I get rid of the red/brown color from my dog (Maltese) eyes and around his mouth? Tried Distiled water!

April 10, 2010 - 9:12 pm 3 Comments

There are other dogs that also have this but a maltese is pure white so it showes better l have used a washrag daily but dosent work either.

There is a product out there for that, you can find it at your local groomers or pet store, or order it over the net.

What is a good male name for a white Maltese dog?

April 9, 2010 - 12:21 am 4 Comments

I might get a male Maltese dog this summer. But I can’t think of a name. I want a nice name for my dog-not a Tucker, Tuck, Chad, Brady, Max or any of that. I think food names for dogs are extremely funny. But if you can think of original or uncommon names, tell me. 10 points for the best anwer!!!

Bianco (masculine for white, in Italian)

Teeth cleaning for a year and a half maltese dog for a reasonable price in san diego?

April 6, 2010 - 11:09 pm 4 Comments

My maltese needs to have a teeth cleaning since his back teeth are very yellow and dark with build up. Does anyone know any animal clinics that do a good job on teeth cleaning for less that you could recommend? I called around and got a quote for about $300.00 and up? It seems very high to me.
Please let me know. I really appreciated if you could respond asap.

300 dollars is frightenly cheap.
I fear what safety measures are not applied to keep cost so low.
Dentisties are expensive to preform and time consuming.
All sugical procedures require a intravenous catheter so they can receive IV fluids throughout the procedure and for emergency access.
The cost fo material and placement is about 30 dollars.

Safe and ideal anesthetic protocols alone include a pre anesthetic medication that control pain, decrease amount of injectable anesthesia needed to induce/intubate for general anesthesia and decreases amount of inhalant anesthesia to maintain anesthesia.
These anesthetic drugs alone can un up to 150 when safe and progessive drugs are used.
Propofol for induction and Sevoflurane for gas/inhalant for maintainence.(keep the animal asleep)
Sevofluane is the safest inhalant anesthesia to use and as I said dentistries ae time consuming and can last up to 2 hours.
Depending upon how the vet charges it maybe 50.00 per 1/2 hour for Sevofluane.
It may be expensive but you want the safest and most reliable drugs to be used.

So besides good anesthesia you pet must be monitored closely by a professional technician and equiptment.
Blood pressure monitoing is essential …..always ask!!!Its a must
Pulse Ox
EKG
heartrate
Temperature regulation.
Is the technician certified/licensed/egistered which is the equivalent to an RN in human medicine.

Then you have the procedure itself that take training, time and patience.

My point is 300 dollars is really inexpensive and would not even cove the cost at the hospital I work at.
That is why if you take advantage of it you must ask many questions to ensure your pet is safe.
Ask about anesthesia used,,equiptment, catheters, fluids as it is essential to prevent kidney damage fom occuring due to anesthesia.
If Ive confused you or if you have questions contact me and Ill try to explain myself!

Best of luck
