DOG Breeds!?
February 21, 2010 - 11:12 pm
I was thinking of getting a dog!
I want one that sheds REALLY lightly, is intelligent, and super small (like I can fit in my purse, small. Lol.)
I want it to be friendly and easy to take care of.
I was thinking of a Shih Tzu, but I’m not sure what else is out there.
Thanks!
Get a Shiffon(shih tzu mix brussels griffon) or a teacup yorkie.

cocker spaniels are cute, small and fun. They don’t need a huge house or lots of toys, just the odd chew toy and a loving owner.

Toy poodle. Definitely the smartest of the toy dogs.

Papillions are very small and intelligent. Look into them.

Chihuahuas are small and intelligent. The short-haired variety shed only lightly. Whether the dog is friendly or not is largely a product of how well the puppy is socialized.

Shih Tzu’s are one of the smartest dogs, my grandmother has one and it is great, they also have brains that are a size and a half bigger then labs and many other large breed dogs.

Shih Tzu’s shed really bad. The best dog would probably be A Mexican Hairless or A Chinese Hairless. They don’t have hair and are also small and can fit in your bag easily.

Hi, you meantion you want a dog that sheds very little. I would suggest a Poodle. They shed very little, are super intelligent, and you can get them quite small. The Shih Tzu’s are lovely, also very intelligent, but can get quite bulky!

It sounds to me like you’re looking for toy dog breeds. Shih Tzu’s would be nice for you, as well as a Toy Poodle, Bichon Frise, Chihuahua, and more.

I WOULD SAY A TEACUP CHIHUAHAU OR SHIH TZU WOULD DO POSSIBLY A TOY POODLE TO.

Take this quiz!
I suggest a mixed breed. They’re cheaper and they have more personalities!

No dog belongs in a purse, so I REALLY hope that was just a size reference and NOT an indication of you planning to torture a dog by sticking it in a bag all the time.
That being said, I do not think a Shih Tzu is anywhere near what you described. They do shed, they are actually a 10-12 pound dog, and they’re not overly bright.
A toy Poodle is the only dog that matches all of your criteria- minimal shedding, intelligent, small, and friendly. Of course, any low-shedding breed DOES require frequent grooming, including Poodles and Shih Tzus.
Make sure you do plenty of research- to be honest it sounds like you want a stuffed animal more than a living, breathing, pooping, peeing dog.

Try looking into the Havanese! Small, cute, smart, minimal shedding. http://www.havanese.org/
Any breed that sheds very little will need regular grooming, by you or a groomer, except hairless ones!
Hairless comes with it’s own set of problems, though. They get cold/hot easily, sunburn and have some dental/hearing issues. Any dog you get should come from a reputable breeder or a shelter.

Toy or Miniature Poodle — Poodles do not shed, but must be brushed regularly – and it will cost you a trip to the groomer every month (otherwise, they get mats, and the hair keeps growing until they look like a small shrub). They are very smart, and easily learn tricks, easy to housebreak, very loving, good house pets, etc. I never really considered owning a Poodle – but I found an abandoned miniature, had her for 10 years. I have owned many dogs – have a dog now – but the Poodle was the best.

The Chinese Crested has a very unique look to them. The resemble tiny ponies. The breed is very smart. They do not shed because they do not have fur. They have hair like you and me. They come in 2 varieties hairless, and powder puff. Both varieties do not shed and are hypoallergenic. Fully grown they weight between 5 and 11 pounds. This would be an awesome pet for you.
