My Dad wants to become a dog breeder what is there to know?
My dad wants to become a dog breeder, for bulldogs (englsih) and i was thinking do we need anything? And is there anything we need to know? If there is like what? Plz help!
Also just to let you know that he was just THINKING about it!!! thanks for your help.
Okay, FIRST and most important.. does you dad want to do this to make money? If the answer is yes, then stop right there. You should not become breeders. Breeding is about finding the best traits of that breed and trying to perfect them. When people are breeding right, they will rarely, if ever, make money. More often, they lose money.
If you got past that, you should contact someone who is a reliable, reputable breeder and observe what they do, take their advice, learn ALL ABOUT THE BREED. EVERYTHING. Every trait, all of the dogs genetic backgrounds, everything!

He needs to know a lot! Research the breed extensively. Ask a local veterinarian to give him information about what types of issues that breed of dog carries.
Make sure you both fully understand what you’re getting yourself into before making the decision to breed. We don’t need anymore BYBs in the world.
Maybe talk your dad into a different hobby

Your dad doesn’t need to be a dog breeder. There are already enough dogs in the world. You have to have a liscense. If you don’t and you are caught you are considered a backyard breeder (BYB) and you will serve jail time. At least that is how it is like where I live. Don’t contribute to the dog population, you obviously don’t know too much about it.

read tons of books and follow a breeder around during a delivery.
On a side note… there are tons of BYB (backyard breeders) out there and there is an overpopulation problem. However, i’m glad to see you are breeding glorified muts. I just ask if he does, that there is some place to sell them.

You need a mentor who has bred dogs for years who knows EXACTLY what they’re doing, who has a firm grasp on health tests that need to be done, the lines of English Bulldogs, etc. It’s not just a matter of two dogs getting together, it’s a matter of finding two dogs who are the best English Bulldogs who will produce the healthiest and good temperamented dogs possible! I suggest starting with your local English Bulldog club if he insists this is something he has to do. It should be done right to avoid producing dogs that will end up in shelters.

Hi,
Definitely yes, your father needs to know many things in breeding. One of them is this http://dogtime.com/breeding-history.html
This will help your father gain tips/ideas on how to breed.

You need money to pay vet bills, often most dogs cannot have the puppies themselves and need surgery. all I know sorry its not more.

I hope he is not planning on making any money. Bulldogs are an expensive dog to breed seeing as they almost always need to be artificially inseminated and ALWAYS need c-sections. Even if you charge top dollar for the pups he’d be lucky to break even.

He needs to go to the library of a bookstore, and READ READ READ! Get a book specializing in the breed and read about them! He should also attend dog shows, to learn about breed standards, and he can speak with professional breeders there.
He needs to realize that breeding is tough, and NOT a money making business! He has to know what he is doing if he wants to make a successful career for himself!
He should also learn about BYBs (Backyard Breeders) so he himself doesn’t become one. Just learning about BYBs can be enough to teach somebody what NOT to do when breeding.
Encourage your dad to visit this section of Yahoo! Answers and become a regular! He will learn SO much in just a TINY amount of time! This really is the best place to go if you want to learn from home!

He needs to know every bit of information that he can gather before he even attempts to breed. I suggest doing tons of research and meeting up with reputable bulldog breeders that can answer any questions he has. He also needs to realize that breeding is a lot of work and takes a lot of time and effort. He needs to be sure he can devote himself to caring for the dogs BEFORE they are born. He can’t just breed dogs and decide he doesn’t like it and try to give the pups to the first people that will take them.

He needs to have a thick wallet and a good mentor. English bulldogs are probably one of the hardest and most expensive dogs to breed. There is a reason why they cost a small fortune. They are not free breeders or free whelpers. They need help (AI) to breed and C-sections in order to have puppies. Bulldog breeding is not for the faint of heart or for poor people.

WOW….. He needs to do tons and tons of studying! also on top of that you cant just buy 2 dogs and breed them and BAM! your a breeder. There is enough unwanted dogs in this world, tell your father to pay a little visit to a shelter and ask questions on why breeding isn’t a good idea at all.
Also Bulldogs especially don’t need to bred, bulldogs have real difficulty giving birth, their big heads really hurts the momma dog.
Tell your father to serious rethink this, its tons of work and dedication and before you breed any dog you should show them, and if they win multiple titles than you give serious thought into breeding.
I show my dogs, and the last litter I bred was about 5 years ago, even just because you show your dog doesn’t mean you need to breed them!
DONT DO IT!

Im going to get thumbs down for this, but im going to speak my opinion anyways.
Your dad SHOULD NOT breed. 2,000,400 (its gone up!) animals die each year because of unnecessary breeding. Each puppy that a bred animal has and the owners sells is 1 animal that dies in shelters. Do you want to add to that statistic?

He needs to research the breed extensively and then find and experienced reputable breeder in the breed who is willing to mentor him. Bulldogs are one of the more difficult dogs to breed as they have trouble both breeding naturally and giving birth (most have to have c-sections) so he most defiantly needs an experienced breeder to guide him
