I am interested in becoming a dog breeder. Where should I start?

I’ve been around dogs all my life and being a breeder would be perfect for me. Where should I start and what else should I know?
I knew I should have said more…I do love dogs and one reason I am interested in becoming a breeder is because then I can own over 4 dogs (I don’t mean hundreds or anything) but I know I can care better for them than a shelter. But as for the breeding part I mean more like breeding for people that want show dogs and such or for the government (fat chance), but that was my idea, not to put more dog population problems on the earth. Just to clear some things up…

When you breed your dog, you put her at risk

Breeding your dog is a costly event, and you will most probably have more expenses than you will have income from puppies

Regardless of how much experience you have, you can still have disasters

Expect to have a number of sleepless nights

Death of just one pup, even in a large litter, can be heartbreaking. Expect to take some time to get over that too.

No vet is perfect.

It is almost impossible to get a fading puppy to survive, and you can lose a whole litter to fading puppy syndrome.

It is impossible to predict how successful the breeding will be. WOW i think there is enough people breeding dogs, reading that page that is posted, from a contributor.. There are millions of people breeding and over breeding dogs why would you want to put your pets through this… Animals at shelters fall, because someone wants to sell there puppies for astronomical prices, when there are millions waiting for homes daily.. So for what you can put a ad in the paper and hope it goes to a good home, and doesn’t end up being that shelter animal….

you should start by fostering puppies at a local shelter. If you love dogs and are truely in it because you love dogs, there are so many puppies at the local shelter or through local organizations that need you!! Don’t add to the problem. Check out the Humane Society of the United States website and if you still really want to breed there is something wrong with you. Also breeding is not a career choice or an easy money thing. I’ve been around animals all my life so I decided to become a veterinary technicion. Breeding is NOT a job.

The goal of breeding is to better the breed itself. Going on that, you should probably look into being active in a breed. You could start by showing, obediance, field, or ajility. From there you will get to know other people in the breed who will be able to help you along the way. Also, buy a lot of books that inform about a breed and it’s standards. Being a breedeer is a serious responsibility. You also need to understand that the puppies need to go to proper homes and not just any joe schmo who calls of wants a puppy.

i beg of you to NOT breed dogs and instead work to help dogs in need at an animal shelter!!! breeding dogs involve choosing a breed and being the best breeder you can be, which includes having a purpose for your dogs besides companion animals because someone finding a dog could find that ANYWHERE! also, breeders don’t REALLY make money by breeding dogs, but they SHOULD do it to only improve the breed, not just to make more.

also, if you’d like to do something with dogs, try to become a dog trainer or behavior specialist or something…. do you see what happens when people decide to breed dogs for the wrong reasons when they think "oh how cute PUPPIES" no, its "oh cute PUPPIES, wait? where did my shoe go, why does the mother do this and this, what’s wrong with this puppy and that one, why did the puppies die when i took them away from their mommy at 2 weeks old???" as in, there are many things that can go wrong, and breeding a dog is nothing like breeding a rat or something.

I think the first question to ask yourself is WHY do you want to breed? Everything else follows from there.

What is the breed you want to breed, and why?
