How to select a dog breeder?
January 29, 2010 - 10:11 pm
Hi, i am looking for our first dog and would appreciate any tips for selecting a breeder, also, what does it mean by "backyard breeders"?
Thanks
Backyard breeders won’t really bother to ask you questions or have you meet their dogs or anything. They are in it for the money, don’t show or do anything with their dogs, and don’t do health screening or checks, etc.
Breeders that you want to get a puppy from will have you fill out a questionnaire, come to meet them and the puppies, they will show their dogs, be very knowledgeable about their breed and answer your questions. They should also have a registered kennel name and be a part of a club like the CKC or AKC.

Read this page. It’s very useful in selecting a good breeder, although it probably isn’t the breed you’re looking for, the concept is exactly the same.

backyard breeders are referred to as people who not like a kennel or big breeder have a litter like a normal person i guess, just be careful that they know what they are doing if you know anyone with a breed you like talk to them or look in the papers, lots of people are agaist the back yard breeder but as long as the person knows what they are doing and take care of them i think they are okay

to be honest you may want to try a shelter first. lots of dogs need a home and i know lots of people who are happy with their ‘rescues’. it’s cheaper to. breeders want hundreds for purebreds. check your local shelters and see if you can click with a dog there. good luck!
