How to pay a dog breeder?
December 16, 2009 - 4:54 pm
Whats the most effective way to pay a dog breeder that you will be seeing face to face? She lives 40 minutes away from me but I will be picking the dog up. Should I take 1200$ out of the bank in bills?
Give Cash.

Cash! This is most likely the only thing that the breeder will accept.

If they won’t take a check and don’t have a paypal account then cash is your only option

You could. See what she wants. Just be sure that your money is safe. You don’t want to lose your money!
Good Luck!

No! Give her a check because it can be tracked and if the dog dies you can cancel the check. It is Proof of Payment. She could turn around and say she never recieved the money. A contract is definately a safety net too!

Carrying that much cash is always risky. Why not just write a check once you arrive it is much safer

No……………..write a check or get a certified check from the bank. You’ll need proof. Also, get a receipt and make sure the dog has had all shots, and certified to be free from hip problems.

Beware don’t pay the entire amount up front. Pay maybe half at most, until she does the job right then pay her the rest.

We’ve always given cash, but have never bought a dog for over $400 dollars.

Money Order or Cashiers Check. Some breeders won’t release the pup until the money clears (you can cancel a Money Order and still try to pass it off as good). Cash is always accepted by any and everybody so it’s probably best if it’s a face to face meeting, just be careful on your way to the breeder!

That’s what I would do. Pay in cash and make sure you get a signed receipt along with your contract and AKC registration application papers. You could call the breeder and ask if this is what she prefers. Some people won’t take personal checks.

If you get a money order you will have a record of having paid for the dog so if you have any problems in the future you will have proof of payment.

Ask the breeder. You should already have a large amount of communication with this breeder to ensure that their dogs are a match for you. You should have filled out a lengthy application and done several back & forth interviews. With all this contact, one more e-mail or phone call asking how she prefers payment isn’t that big of a deal.
At $1200, I assume this is a breeder that shows (or works) her dogs, does extensive genetic and structural testing on the parents, and has an excellent sales contract. http://www.pbrc.net/breeding3.html for more info.

Cash is the best way to go when it’s face to face. Some may not accept a check since they can bounce from dishonest buyers.

Dont pay a breeder for a dog. Shelters are so overcrowded with dogs that they are killing them off faster than they can be put up for adoption. Please take this advice. Stop buying dogs, youre keeping this trend alive and killing dogs buy buying puppies. Try craigslist also, people post their dogs on there as a last resort before leaving them at a shelter.

Contact the Breeder and ask how they want to be paid.
Make sure that you get vax certificate and reg papers
Check with your vet to see what other tests should be done for that particular breed ie hip dysplasia .
Get a receipt

I prefer to pay cash on collection for my pups. Some of the breeders I have booked a pup from have been very reluctant or point blank refused to accept a cheque, because it may not be honoured by the back & involve lawyers/possible civil case to recover the money.
