Australian Shepherds are active, intelligent and responsive. Highly trainable, this versatile family dog can be a great companion. They are wary with strangers but never aggressive. Aussie Sheps are very playful and affectionate with their owners, and get along well with children. They have a high prey drive, however, and are not trustworthy with smaller animals. They do, however, get along well with other dogs. They are very intelligent, with a strong instinct to herd and guard. They have high problem solving abilities, and are very obedient when trained. They actually enjoy obedience classes. Australian Shepherds are strong and enthusiastic dogs.
Height: 18 - 23 inches.
Weight: 35 - 75 lbs.

Border Terriers are plucky, alert, and inquisitive. They remain friendly to almost anyone, and are generally very good with other dogs and pets. They can be independent and entertain themselves, but like any other dog, should not be left alone for a very long time. They like to dig and some like to bark. He has working abilities and can be trained to work. Border Terriers are active outside but are generally good-natured and loving at home.
Height: 10 inches.
Weight: Females: 11.5 - 14 lbs.; Males: 13 - 15.5 lbs

Try some breed selectors http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm

I agree with shelter! You can let your other dogs meet their new friend and know right away if they will get along. You're also saving a life! Can't beat that.

And don't believe that shelter dogs are bad dogs, they've just had bad luck. If a shelter dog has a behavior issue they either don't put them up for adoption or they will put on the cage "not good with children", or "other dogs", etc. We've had two fabulous dogs from shelters, friendly, already well trained, and healthy animals that were great companions.
References :
How about a cat to keep the other three dogs entertained. Works well around here. And provides entertainment for the humans as well.
References :
It sounds as though you have enough dogs for a big house and yard. If your husband likes to hunt, consider a Beagle, or another type hunting dog. They are all cool dogs.
