What kind of large dog would be best for us?

April 16, 2010 - 4:36 pm 27 Comments

My family is wanting to get a large dog, we don’t care for small dogs that bark too much. But we are a little confused when it comes to the breed of dog we want because we hear about dogs that have bad temperments and are not good with children. We have three children ages are 10, 7, 5. We just need a dog that would be a good watch dog, but gentle and loving with our kids. Can anyone help?
We want to keep him inside, so we need a breed that would house train easily, too.

Consider a Boxer. They don’t bark much unless they have a good reason to. They have excellent temperments. I personally would not recommend a lab, they are way to high strung., speaking from personal experience. Boxers are one of the best family dogs. They love children, are excellent watch dogs, and are very intelligent. We have one, and have two kids, 16 months and 3 and 1/2. Our dog loves them, has to be with them outside. Some people believe boxers are mean, but they are very opposite. They just look intimidating, and they are actually big babies. Do some research on them and you’ll find all good things about them and families.

What kind of winter dog house do i need so my dog wont be cold outside at night?

April 14, 2010 - 5:24 pm 13 Comments

I’m planning to move to a colder climate where it can get as low or lower then 15 degrees at night. I dont want my dog to freeze or get sick, but where im going i’m not allowed to have the dog inside. I’m trying to find out what dog house to get that is not to much and what i can put in the dog house to keep my dog warm.

Well, hun you didn’t say what kind of dog you have, which is a factor in weather as cold as your preparing for. Personally I use hay for my outside dogs. However in the lower teens is usually as cold as it gets here. Rarely it drops down to zero, then I put all my dogs in the house. The teen temperatures are only for a few nights out of the winter, and the day quickly warms back up into the upper thirties and forties. I just don’t know, it would sure help if I knew your breed of dog.

How to train my dog not to be aggressive with other dogs?

April 12, 2010 - 7:20 pm 5 Comments

I have a dog (8ball) he is a retriever mix and about 10 months old. I have been trying to walk him but every time we run into a dog he tries to attack.

I turn around and try to go the opposite way but he just pulls and growls. I really want to be able to take him to the dog park and let him play with other dogs and play fetch at the park instead of our small backyard.

What can i do to train him to be more friendly with other dogs.

P.S. I dont want to get a personal trainer. It costs too much money.

i recently got a different type of head collar for my dog…it’s called a "gentle leader". i got it from my vet’s office. it doesn’t muzzle my dog, but rather when she tries put pull and i give a little tug her head will go to the side, since she wants to look straight ahead she stops pulling. immediately tell her "good girl, good girl" and give her a treat. then we moved on to if i/ we knew a house w/ a dog or person walking was coming i would could actually get her to sit for a minute, praise, praise, praise, calming pets, and when she was settled down we would continue and when we past the situation i would praise her more and give her a treat…had to do the same with passing cars (she would l go bananas jumping at them…1st we worked on sitting etc…)
the improvement i saw was quick but then again i’m more stubborn than our 6 mo. rottie that liked to try and walk me. i also make sure i was walking her if not twice, at least once daily off property.

good luck!

Why do people think dog parks are a good idea?

April 10, 2010 - 9:12 pm 10 Comments

Personally, I think dog parks are a horrible idea. Many dogs, mostly small and elderly dogs have been killed at dog parks. Dogs in dog parks get into fights over rank issues. I don’t know all the dogs at a dog park, so I don’t know if they are aggressive, infested with parasites, or sick. I protect my dog and will not expose her to strange dogs in an environment such as a dog park. So, why do so many people think dog parks are a good place to bring their dogs?

Dogs are naturally social animals.. unfortunately, many people use the dog park as their sole source of exercise.. and bring unstable dogs to the park. My dogs listen well and play well with others.. but if there’s a rowdy dog there, I have to be sure to keep my 3 away from him, and I’ll even (TRY) to help out the owner of the other dog and tell them what’s wrong with the way they’re handling their dog. As far as parasites and diseases.. my 3 are on flea preventative, and interceptor.. and are UTD on their shots.. so there’s very little to worry about. Sarcoptic mange is about the only worry I have.. and it’s pretty obvious on a dog.

Still, I only go to the dog park on slow days/times, and make sure I keep an eye on all of my dogs so that they won’t get into trouble. But, yes, a lot of dog owners do not keep control, and that results in fights.

I also walk my dog to the park so that they aren’t full of energy when we get there. They are a bit tired, and therefore are more stable and pack-friendly upon arrival. People just don’t follow these simple guidelines.. and they don’t really understand basig dog psychology. It’s not that hard to recognize a dominant dog, and a dog who is about to attack. The trick is nipping it in the bud before something bad occurs.

Biggest Dog park pet peeve? little dogs who are so dominant, they pick fights with big dogs.. and their owner thinks that their pomeranian nipping and barking at other dogs is "cute." (It’s not!) But if their dog starts a fight and comes out worse off.. it won’t be the pom’s fault, now will it?

What breed of dog makes the best family pet?

April 9, 2010 - 12:21 am 27 Comments

I have two young children and would like to get a dog. We have two cats but I feel like it’s time for a dog. I don’t want a large dog but I don’t want one of those small old lady dogs either (I won’t be putting it in the shopping cart to go to the grocery). I would prefer short hair because I don’t want to be vacuuming up dog hair all the time.

A mutt. We have 2 and they are the best. Try http://www.petfinder.com

For our latest mission, over 2,000 people walked “invisible dogs” down the streets of Brooklyn on a Sunday afternoon. The leashes were on loan from the current owner of 51 Bergen Street, the factory space where the invisible dog toy was invented in the 1970s. Participants of all ages spread out from Red Hook to Brooklyn Heights, very seriously walking their very silly dogs.

Dog fighting is horrible, but is it worse than how animals are treated in food processing plants?

April 6, 2010 - 11:09 pm 11 Comments

With the recent trouble with Michael Vick and his involvement in dog fighting rings, the subject of animal cruelty is on everyone’s minds as of late. But the great unspoken is how animals such as pigs, cows, ducks, and chickens are treated in your basic food processing plants; from cows’ throats being slashed, to ducks being forcefed with a tube down their throat. If dog fighting is a felony offense, then why do major food processing corporations continue to administer their own brand of animal cruelty? Who decided that dogs have more rights than other animals?
If your response is to point out the fact that animals in food processing plants are for food, and therefore the treatment is acceptable, I then ask you this: If dogs were considered food, would it then be acceptable?
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/07/20/national/main630674.shtml

well I’m sure that if the animals at the food processing plant were treated that why as a form of entertainment it wouldn’t happen. they did this for entertainment not to provide the population with food.

add: if we ate dogs in this country then they way they processed the food would be acceptable. they are not being killed for ENTERTAINMENT, that would be wrong.

as for the other answerer who said Vick is being set upon because he is a celebrity, that’s just absurd. as a celebrity he should know he’s in the spotlight and being in that spotlight was a surety he would get caught. we had a fighting ring broke up where i am a few months ago and there was a big uprising of animal lovers for that, and all those people were, were a bunch of dumb crack heads, dope dealers, and welfare recipients. so you can drop the "he’s a celebrity and that’s why he’s getting in trouble" BS.
