He now thinks he is everyone’s boss. He misbehaves with everyone. He has even started biting our legs if we do not pay him excessive attention. he would bark a lot, if i pay attention to our 17 year old male cat who is often in poor health.
The maltese growls at the cat too, even though the cat does nothing but sit in one place suffering from arthritis.
Why has my maltese has forgotten all training and rules? How to bring him on right track.
Unless your dog has experienced any recent trauma, then the only answer to why his training has been forgotten is that you have forgotten to reinforce it. So you must re-teach. You must not let your dog believe that he is the alpha, one reason is because that creates so much anxiety in the dog. It is very scary for a little dog especially to believe that he is in charge of the household, that he is the pack leader, and the anxiety about that is fueling his behavior as much as your reinforcement of his alpha role.
You must act to stop the behaviors immediately when they are happening. You must let him know that you will not tolerate acting out and that you yourself believe that you are in charge. If you don’t believe that, your dog will never believe that. The more anxious you get with the aversive situations the more anxious your dog will become. So you need to calm down and remind yourself that you are responsible for being the leader of the pack.
Don’t let your dog dominate you. Eat before your dog eats to reinforce this. Make sure that if your dog is lying down in your path that you make the dog move out of your way instead of going around. These seem like little things to us but to dogs these are enormous signals. Do not give the dog affection until he is in a calm and submissive state, according to Cesar Milan the Dog Whisperer. When there is growling at the cat, put the dog in a time out place. Consult with a professional trainer–even watch the Dog Whisperer because there are a lot of episodes about a small dog being out of control, you will get some tips. But it must be clear in your mind that you are the one responsible for what your dog believes about your role and his role. Be in charge. Act in charge. He’s just a little dog. And he will feel so much better inside when he knows that you are in charge of the household, because he will feel calm and not overburdened with responsibility he can’t handle.
