Because my dog has tear stains and I have bought and I have bought the tear stain remover and it’s not working what else should I do?
Hi Zack
Beardie is almost correct…
Tear stains are (in the main) the result of the normal bacteria in the tears bonding with the iron deposits in the tears as they start to rust (oxidise) in the open air. This process creates the enzyme that is the building block of the red yeast.
This is more of a problem in dogs such as maltese and bichons as the structure of the eyes and faces means that the tears do not fall off of the face.
The damp fur provides and ideal breeding ground for the bacteria to multiply- and thus create more red yeast.
The above is also true for beard and other coat stains.
In an ideal world if you were able to keep the fur dry there would not be a problem but in reality you need to sleep at some point.
There are wipes and pastes that you can use but I find these to be too much hastle- I am too lazy.
Diet seems to be the greatest factor in reducing staining- increasingly people using the BARF raw food diet notice less staining. The problem here though is working out exactly which foods are the better or worse.
For along time the only sure fire way of treating (not curing) the problem was to use antibiotics. Angels eyes was the market leader- using the antibiotic tylosin.
Increasingly people became concerned about the health implications of using antibiotics in the long term to get rid tear stains. To this end several governments outlawed the angels eyes type products.
As the ban in the UK was introduced I for one was forced to find another product. I too was looking for a natural solution. The product that I found after spending hours in forums was Angels Delight.
Angels delight works by oxidising the iron inside the body before it exits via the tears. As it is oxidised the (harmless) bacteria has nothing to bond with and the red yeast is not formed.
I am extremely happy with Angels Delight because, even ignoring the tears, it is good for my dogs as it is full of nutrients and vitamins. It also helps with skin conditions and cataracts and arthritis.
To the best of my knowledge Angels Delight is the only product for getting rid of those red dog tear stains that is actually good for your dog. This doesn’t mean that the others are bad but they are definitely not actually good.
There are other things that you can try
Filtered water
metal water bowl
cider vinegar in the water
diet change
ps never use antibiotics on teething dogs- it can stain them yellow for ever and be warned that they are fatal to dogs
All of the products that you feed to your dog will take about a month to work. They are not really stain removers but stain preventers.
