How many teeth does a Maltese Dog have?

April 2, 2010 - 10:39 pm 2 Comments

My friends dog just had 15 teeth removed due to decay. How many will it have left to eat with; that’s what I’m wondering.

An adult dog, no matter what breed has 42 natural teeth. Subtract 15 and you have 27 remaining teeth. Plenty of teeth to eat with provided your "friend" takes care of the dog from now on and it doesn’t need to have any more teeth removed due to owner neglect!

How can I get my brother’s Maltese dog to get along with my Quaker parrot?

March 31, 2010 - 8:14 pm 2 Comments

He just got his dog, and the other day it attacked my bird. How can I get them to get along? The dog is 4 years old, and the parrot, I’m not sure how old he is exactly because we found him.

They say if you introduce them slowly, then your Maltese will get along with any animal. (I have a Maltese too, I think they just pick and choose who/what they will be friends with! jk-kinda) They are very protective/jealous dogs he might have thought you were being attacked or just decided the bird didn’t belong in his house. Try letting someone else hold the bird, maybe a non-family member the dog likes. Try this a couple of times a day if possible.Let the dog be in the room when the bird is just sitting on his perch. Pet-Smart also offers a Socialization Class if all else fails. Good Luck.

Why does my Maltese dog tremble when he is laying down?

March 29, 2010 - 10:29 pm 3 Comments

My Maltese is 11 years old, and he trembles sometimes when he is laying down. It doesn’t last long and it is not a continual tremble. It is every few seconds. Then it just stops. Is this something I should be worried about? It is almost like he does it as he is drifting off to sleep, because the moment he opens his eyes it stops. Please help me. I would die if something happened to him.

I don’t think it is anything to be concerned about, my maltese and bichon both do this sometimes before falling asleep or during sleep. Once they are awake they are fine.

how do you get rid of a maltese dog tear stains?

March 28, 2010 - 12:30 am 4 Comments

Because my dog has tear stains and I have bought and I have bought the tear stain remover and it’s not working what else should I do?

Hi Zack

Beardie is almost correct…

Tear stains are (in the main) the result of the normal bacteria in the tears bonding with the iron deposits in the tears as they start to rust (oxidise) in the open air. This process creates the enzyme that is the building block of the red yeast.

This is more of a problem in dogs such as maltese and bichons as the structure of the eyes and faces means that the tears do not fall off of the face.

The damp fur provides and ideal breeding ground for the bacteria to multiply- and thus create more red yeast.

The above is also true for beard and other coat stains.

In an ideal world if you were able to keep the fur dry there would not be a problem but in reality you need to sleep at some point.

There are wipes and pastes that you can use but I find these to be too much hastle- I am too lazy.

Diet seems to be the greatest factor in reducing staining- increasingly people using the BARF raw food diet notice less staining. The problem here though is working out exactly which foods are the better or worse.

For along time the only sure fire way of treating (not curing) the problem was to use antibiotics. Angels eyes was the market leader- using the antibiotic tylosin.

Increasingly people became concerned about the health implications of using antibiotics in the long term to get rid tear stains. To this end several governments outlawed the angels eyes type products.

As the ban in the UK was introduced I for one was forced to find another product. I too was looking for a natural solution. The product that I found after spending hours in forums was Angels Delight.

Angels delight works by oxidising the iron inside the body before it exits via the tears. As it is oxidised the (harmless) bacteria has nothing to bond with and the red yeast is not formed.

I am extremely happy with Angels Delight because, even ignoring the tears, it is good for my dogs as it is full of nutrients and vitamins. It also helps with skin conditions and cataracts and arthritis.

To the best of my knowledge Angels Delight is the only product for getting rid of those red dog tear stains that is actually good for your dog. This doesn’t mean that the others are bad but they are definitely not actually good.

There are other things that you can try

Filtered water
metal water bowl
cider vinegar in the water
diet change

ps never use antibiotics on teething dogs- it can stain them yellow for ever and be warned that they are fatal to dogs

All of the products that you feed to your dog will take about a month to work. They are not really stain removers but stain preventers.

Below is the link to the natural solution to dog tear stains- Angels Delight

good luck

Where can I find cute hair bows for my longhaired Maltese dog?

March 24, 2010 - 12:25 am 2 Comments

She is white with really long fur and I have to pin it out of her face. I have a few baby barrettes and some dog cute bows I bought at the pet store. Where else can I find cute clips, bows and stuff for her? Ones with rhinestones would be especially funny! Is there anywhere I can find ones preferably with barrette closures?

check out ur local dollar stores and u will find all kinds of hair barrettes for any ocassion. when i had my poodles i use to go and get them different ones for christmas or fancy kinds just to make them look cute.i also made them with ribbons and tied them on little strands of hair. there are lots of ideas out there and many hair things to find so take a look. good luck.
