I’m going to be getting a dog at the beginning of next summer, and will be certifying him/her with the Delta Society as a therapy dog. I would like to get a dog with a naturally calm and gentle temperament. What are some breeds you have seen to exhibit these characteristics?
It has been my experience that the people being visited prefer smaller dogs that can sit in their laps. Toward that end, consider an English Toy Spaniel. They are nearly cat-like in their personalities and generally enjoy being lap dogs. This is true of most toy breeds, but many are one person dogs and may be snappy toward strangers.
The Papillion is probably the most easily trained of the toy dogs and that would be an advantage for teaching some cute tricks to entertain.
I’ve seen many patients gravitate toward Shih Tzus as well, because of the fluffiness.
I’m going to make another unusual suggestion: Greyhound, or the smaller Italian Greyhound or Whippet. These dogs tend to be warmer than other breeds, which may be soothing or appealing to some patients. The Greyhound in particular is well suited to lying contentedly.
While there is nothing wrong with a good lab or golden, these breeds are very common. A less common breed would be a good conversation point. The actual bulk of therapy dog work, for the human partner, is chatting with the patient. The top two conversation topics are the therapy dog itself, or pets of the patient being visited. An unusual breed gives more fodder for the conversation.
—-edit—-
It doesn’t take anything like three years to train a therapy dog. Dogs as young as one year old are permitted to take the tests. A pet dog with basic obedience skills and good manners (including toilet training) can complete an 8 week class and pass a test. Not all would do it that quickly, but with a lovely, well socialized pet and basic training skills on the part of the owner it is entirely possible.
I am looking to buy a dog but cant seem to chose one. I am wanting everyones opinion on what kind of dog do they think will be the best for my family. I have two children. Ages 5 and 2. I own my own home and have a big back yard although its not fenced. I am also a stay at home mother so the dog will get plenty attention. What will be the best dog for my family? Small dog or Big. I dont care, as long as it will be a great dog.
I think you should do some research , if you have children i think a Lab would be good but they will have to be train when they are very young because like all puppies they will need training , also golden retrievers, boxers are great it has to be I think a girl if you planning to keep inside is a lot easier to train and also make sure you fix her. I had many dogs in my life ar the moment i have 3. Good luck.
I live in California and have two small children. The people behind us just moved in and build a dog run up against the bordering fence. They also placed the dog house against the fence and the dog is trying to get over to my yard.
These dogs bark & growl all day long. If they make it through the fence or over the fence. Do I have the right to shoot the dogs?
In my opinion, not sure if it’s against the law, but if a dog comes in my yard threatening to attack me or my family I would shoot it. I would never shoot a dog without it being absolutely necessary, but in this case you can’t risk your kids being hurt or even killed. The dog may be ok if it gets out of its territory but you never know. Please don’t shoot the dog if it gets in your yard and acts ok. Call animal control or your neighbor. Have you tied talking to your neighbors about it. Try to prevent it from happening all together if you can.
I made this for my Mini-Pinscher for Halloween as he has about the same size and profile as an AT-AT. It is made out of picture backing board, hot glue, a sharpie, pillow stuffing, and my skin (I used a real scalpel to cut it out, plus the hot glue took a chunk of skin off as well).

I live in my parents’ home, and they do not like dogs in their home. I have always wanted to start dog showing, but am not able to get a show dog myself. What are ways to participate in conformation showing without purchasing a show dog? (How to find someone to allow me handle their dog if they don’t even know me) I can’t get into junior handling since I am over the age limit.
go to a few dog shows and talk to the owners/handlers and talk to them about getting started in handling. this would also be a good expierence to get used to the set ups of shows and also to see how others handle the dogs.
More specifically, whats in dog treats thats so different from regular dog food, and makes dogs freak over their treats? Why isnt this just added to regular dog food to make it more appealing to dogs, not that it really matters?
Nothing is different in most, they are cheaply made, most are very high in fat content and have very high ‘flavourings’ in them…not really good food for dogs, but because they are different and are given as a treat they become high value to the dog………….if you fed a bowl of treats a day, they would lose that high value and they certainly wouldn’t give the nutrients required, make your dog fat and un healthy
My dog Emma was a bit confused by the fact that she was watching my cat on the computer. At one point she actually goes over to see the cat in her box to make sure she is really there. LOL
