What are some dog breeds that won’t grow up to be too big?

May 16, 2011 - 7:05 pm 4 Comments

I want to convince my mom to buy another dog. This time, one that won’t get too big. My other dog, Casey, she was a really big puppy, so she stayed outside. She got into our neighbors rat poison and died the next day. I blame my mom for keeping a puppy in such harsh conditions. It wasn’t just rat poison outside. But anyway, what are some small dog breeds? If you know the price, then that would help also. Thanks!

Yorkie (non-shedding), Maltese(non-shedding), Toy Poodle (shed a little, but not much), Shih Tzu(non-shedding), Pomeranian (shed), are all small. Or if you want something a little bigger than those beagles (shed) aren’t big, but not small like the ones above. Hope I helped!

Are dog breeds and human races a good comparison and are they the same thing?
Black Human,White human,Asian,East Indian, and other races are those the same as different dog breeds.Would dog breeds be the best comparison to human races since those dog breeds and human races are the same specie of human and domestic dog.A lion and a tiger are different species and humans of different races are not.Could those human races be subspecies rather than completely different species like Bengal Tiger and Siberian Tiger?

Yes dog breeds and human races are very similar. Dog breeds are called subspecies, and human races could also be considered subspecies.

What smaller dog breeds have similar personalities to Labradors?

April 23, 2011 - 10:31 am 4 Comments

I’m moving into a townhouse, and I really love Labs. The place I’ll be living has a 40lb weight limit. I’d like to know what dog breeds have similar personality traits. I particularly like the really loving and loyal aspect of their personalities.

Papillons are active, like Labradors, and generally outgoing, like Labradors. They can be a little more yippy than a Labrador though.

What about looking for a Lab mix at a shelter? There are plenty of tiny Lab mixes that are only about thirty or forty pounds. They look and act like Labs- just smaller!

This dog, for example: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17227483

Shih Tzus and Cavailier Spaniels also have very outgoing personalities. Beagles might be another good bet.

What dog breeds share similarities with pulies?

April 19, 2011 - 10:08 am 8 Comments

I found a dog that looks like a puli with slight differences in it’s hair and it’s face. Maybe it’s not a puli; are there any breeds similar in appearance to pulies?

Bergamasco? Komondor? Havanese? Poodle? All have or can have corded coats.

If the dog did not have a corded coat it could be a Pumi.

But you may have just found a mixed dog.

What two dog breeds are most often confused with each other?

April 17, 2011 - 11:49 am 13 Comments

I am researching dog breeds to help my coworkers to better identify breeds. I need some help to figure where to go next. I already have pit bulls, Cocker spaniels, Yorkies vs Silkies, Lhasas vs Shih Tzus, and Huskies vs Malamutes.

Pit Bulls and Staffordshire Terriers are often mistaken by Black-mouth Curs, Presa Carnaros, Bull Mastiffs, American Bulldogs, Cano Corsos, Alpha Blue Bloods, Patterdale Terriers, Old English Bull Dogs, Dogo Argentinos, Boer Baels, Ca De Bau, and Alano Espanole.

American Bulldogs, old English Bulldogs and American Boxers are often confused.

Shih-Tsu and Maltese ale long haired look-alikes

Bull Mastiffs and Dog D’ Bordeaux look very much alike

Catahoolas and Red Dalmatians are very much look alikes

Papaw

What are some dog breeds that are completely devoted to their owners?

April 16, 2011 - 10:46 am 11 Comments

I want a dog that will be completely devoted to me, will easily trained to fetch, swims, will play well with my siberian husky, and is more of a watch dog but not to the point of being aggressive. Shoot me some ideas on some breeds that fit the bill. Thanks so much!

This is a training issue. Not a breed issue. The dog will be bonded with the person who does most or all of the work with them.

What are dog breeds that are least prone to cancer?

April 14, 2011 - 10:42 am 2 Comments

I know retrievers are really prone to it. We just lost my dog to it 1 month tomorrow. We might be getting another dog over the summer and I want to get one with a healthy medical back round. What are some breeds that stay relatively healthy.
I know that. But arn’t some dogs just more prone to it then others?

ANY dog from a REPUTABLE breeder that knows every dog in their dog’s pedigree for the last 100 years, has done every breed specific genetic testing, etc…

If no dog in the dog’s lines has had cancer for the past 100 years, it’s VERY unlikely that dog will have cancer.

EDIT: As far as specific breeds go, if you’ve never heard of it before chances are it’s fairly rare, and therefor not as mass produced by idiots, puppy mills, and BYBs. Labs, german shepherds, collies, huskies, etc…. dogs that EVERYONE knows of and EVERYONE wants are a lot more prone to be targeted by the BYBs and puppy mills. Therefor, there is going to be a higher percentage of dogs in that breed with genetic defects and health problems.
