What dog breeds have the most interesting history?

May 19, 2012 - 10:00 pm 8 Comments

Like, I think its interesting Chows used to be bred for their meat among other things And Dalmations used to run along carriages.

What dog breeds do you think have the most interesting history?

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is named after a fictional character who owned similar terriers (the work was published in 1814 and thereafter the breed was known by his name)- the breed colors today "Pepper" and "Mustard" are after the character’s dogs’ names in the book.

The Clumber Spaniel very nearly was lost in the French Revolution – they belonged to a nobleman of France who sent his beloved dogs to a friend in England in case the revolution threatened them. The noble and his family lost their lives, but the Spaniels were kept and bred in England.

The Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis were actually bred to spread cattle out instead of keeping them together. When the breeds were developed, a Welsh farmer was granted land for his stock based on how much they utilized, so they developed a little dog to chase the cattle so they would spread out over a larger area.

The Leonburger was bred merely to look like a lion- the town of Leonburg wanted a lion-looking dog to go on it’s crest.

Dog breeds that are good with cats and small living spaces?

May 17, 2012 - 11:15 pm 5 Comments

I’m looking to get a new dog, but I have two house cats. I want the dog to be able to live with my cats without quarrel. Currently, my two favorites are the American Eskimo and Yorkshire Terrier. I live in a three-story condo, so I’m trying to keep the dog fairly small. I have a large park-ish area near my house, so getting the dog out and about wouldn’t be too difficult. I’m looking for the best dog breeds to get along with cats and smaller living spaces. Any suggestions?

I’ve had 2 Miniature Dachshunds that were fabulous with our cats, best buds. My daughter’s rescue Chihuahua is also great with the cats. Plays very nicely with them. I don’t recommend a small Terrier, but most Yorkies aren’t too bad. No Jack Russells for sure. Bichons, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus are usually quite good.

What are some dog breeds that are good for allergy sufferers?

May 6, 2012 - 11:40 am 7 Comments

I really want a dog but my parents won’t let me get one until I am 14. I am 13 now.

They are not too enthusiastic about me getting a dog so I am going to make a PowerPoint about a certain breed of dog that will fit our lifestyle.

The only problem is, my dad has athsma and we think he might be allergic to dogs.

What are the dog breeds that shed lightly and are almost hypoallergenic?

Note: I know that NO dog is completely hypoallergenic and they all shed!

Thanks :)

Here’s a list of dogs breeds that shed little or no hair:

http://www.justdogbreeds.com/low-shedding-dog-breeds.html

If you google "dogs that don’t shed", you’ll find longer lists of low-shedding dog breeds, but I chose to show you this one because it has photos of each of the dog breeds and if you click on a breed that catches your eye, you’ll find loads of useful info about it, along with more photos. =]

But remember, it might not be the actual dog hair that your dad is allergic to. When a dog goes outside, it will trap pollen in its fur. The longer the dog’s fur is, the more pollen it will bring into the house with it. And since pollen is known to trigger asthma attacks, and since your dad has asthma, I highly recommend get a short-haired dog.

I hope I was able to help and good luck finding your perfect dog!

What are some dog breeds that you believe are best to purchase from the country they originated from?

November 30, 2011 - 12:37 am 13 Comments

Just wondering.

Also, do you think that for some breeds, the country they originated from try and stay more true to the breed than other countries that sell/breed the same breed?

If you could purchase any dog breed from another country-what breed would it be?

Also I apologize if some wording for this question seems off, I couldn’t think of how to word some of it better. Thank you in advance to anyone to responds!
Thank you all for your input, it was interesting to read and many gave good points.

well that is not generally true, there are some cases where the breed is more correct from their originated countries, like german pointers from germany, vizslas from hungary, russian toy terriers from russia, akita inu from japan, german shepherds from germany… these breeds (well the ones that are actually coming to me now) if you choose to get them from their originated countries, they would be nicer… but i have also seen dogs like yorkshire terriers, in poland they have kennels of the nicest looking dogs, also in hungary… chihuahuas the same, and i believe that most dogs that you would purchase from russia would be absolutely stunning, i.e french poodles of all the sizes, chinese crested both hairless and powder-puff, afghan hounds, german shepherds, caucasian shepherds and so many more… i believe it all has to do with breeding the right dogs together, finding the finest bloodlines, all my dogs apart from my yoirkies came from russia… they all became champions in my country and in russia too. so it all comes down to crossing the best of the best bloodlines together

What breeds of dog can you have fingertip control over, most i want one for schutzhund?

September 26, 2011 - 9:11 pm 5 Comments

What guard dogs/ personal protection dogs are the most obedient and you can have fingertip control of? I want to do shutzhund mostly so what breeds are really good for that sport? I was thinking Doberman, Rottweiler, Belgian malinois, Belgian Tervuren?, German Shepherd, or possibly a OFRN APBT? What dog breeds do you think are best for this sport? Which one of these breeds would be good for schutzhund?

All can be great, but it’s based on how well you train them. Based on your answers about dogs, I don’t think you should get ANY of these hard headed breeds. In ALL of your answers, you pick hard headed and generally dominant breeds for the dog that you plan on getting (and it changes every time), but in your answers about training, you suggest bully-based training, and basically think every dog should be handled like you’re Cesar Millan. Dogs should not be trained like how you say, and if you do that with one of the breeds you mentioned, your dog will turn into a terror and WILL become aggressive. Please, don’t get a dog if that’s how you plan on training your dog.

How did dog breeds changed their appearance so much in such a short time of evolution?

how did dog breeds changed their appearance so much in such a short time of evolution ? I mean there are very significant differences between dog breeds e.g. chiwawa vs great dane. It sais that people selected and breed them in the last thousands of years. A few thousands of years seems a very short period to me for such big differences.

That is the power of artificial selection. Breeders selected for the traits that were desired and only those dogs reproduced. Look at the Siberian Fox experiment. All it took was 10 generations for domesticated foxes to emerge. Imagine how much more changes could be selected for over centuries.

The miniature breeds share a mutation near a gene for a growth factor receptor. A common mutation may result in a common trait.

What are some medium to large dog breeds that do well with apartment life?

August 27, 2011 - 7:45 am 9 Comments

I want to do a lot of research on a dog before I get one, but it must be good with living in an apartment. I have a backyard, but will most likely be walking it around the neighborhood, as my superintendent has a not-so-friendly dog back there a lot of the time. I most likely will try to get one from a rescue or shelter, but I just want some breeds I can look into that fit my lifestyle. Thanks!

Any breed can adapt to apt life, if you are willing to take be active with the dog. Dogs need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, they become bored and destructive otherwise.

It would also be wise to check if there is any restriction on dogs allowed at the complex.

What are some small dog breeds/ good names for small dogs?

August 22, 2011 - 7:37 pm 5 Comments

I’m interested in buying a pomeranian, it’s small and fluffy, which is my ideal dog.
I would like to know some other small and fluffy dog breeds, also I need some names as I will be getting one soon!

Long haired chihuahua’s are small and fluffy – I have three, pokie, bandit and lil girl. You could call the puppy minnie or precious also :)

On a different note, and please don’t take offense to this – if you are "buying" a puppy from a pet store you are buying a puppymill dog. Please consider putting the word in to local shelters that you are interested in small puppies/dogs and they will call you when they come in. You would be saving a dogs life by doing this. There are also breed specific rescue sites online where you may find some puppies. If you insist on buying a puppy, please make sure that it is a reputable breeder. Supporting puppymills is against everything I believe in and I hope you will make the right decision. Good luck with your new puppy!

What small dog breeds would you suggest for a 5 year old?

August 13, 2011 - 7:10 pm 16 Comments

I have a five year old son who had been around dogs his whole life. My parents have two labs who are six years old. My son spends 3-4 nights a week at his grandparent’s house? He wants to get a small dog. I have done a lot of research on the subject and have narrowed it down to either a Corgi or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Between these two breeds which one do you think would be the better choice?

None. A small dog and young kid do not mix. The small dog could easily be injured by too young of a child….especially when the child didn’t mean to harm the dog. Also, there’s only so much that a dog could put up with. Kids annoying dogs commonly results in dog bites.

What are dog breeds similar to jack russell terriers?

August 5, 2011 - 3:25 am 6 Comments

i recently lost a jack russell terrier and i am planning on getting another dog. i was thinking another jack russell just because i love their personalities but i’d like to consider other dog breeds. what do you think? im fine with dogs that have a lot of energy and bark a lot (typical jack russell).
my main thing is that whatever dog breed i get needs to have a TON of personality
smaller dog is preferable

JRT’s are great dogs. I’m partial to them, myself. Make sure that you either go through a rescue (the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America is a great one) or that you find a breeder who does GENETIC testing (not just a vet check-up) and who works their dogs.

That said, you have some great suggestions above with the Westies and the Fox and the Rat Terriers.

Some other great breeds that might work for you: Cardigan Welsh Corgi (Pembrokes are nice too, but they’re slightly less active), Norwich Terrier, Norfolk Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, Scottish Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Dachshund, and don’t forget to check the shelters for a small dog that would fit your lifestyle and needs a home.
