The question of a dog breeder advertising a dog that they do not own.?

March 1, 2010 - 10:29 pm 4 Comments

I am the owner and have put on AKC titles on the dog. She has my dog on a puppy mill site to sell her puppies. She co-bred the litter that my dog came from. She did not have the litter herself. But she is still listed as one of the breeders. Is there any law to stop her from doing this.

Probably not if she listed as co breeder on the registration application.
If she is advertizing it as one of her breedings she is technically correct. Morally it may suck but legally she is listed as a breeder. Unless she specifically states she is the sole breeder or something else that is wrong theres not likely much you can do about it. Sorry.

If im not mistaken the owner of the dam is considered the owner of the litter and the breeder. If she owns only the sire to your dog she may not be legally considered the breeder. It wouldnt hurt to contact akc and ask them who they consider the breeder to be. You could also contact legal aid for your area, they handle civil issues based on income, or contact a local lawyer familiar with breeding issues. May be a bit tough to locate one.

I am interested in becoming a dog breeder. Where should I start?

February 27, 2010 - 11:15 pm 7 Comments

I’ve been around dogs all my life and being a breeder would be perfect for me. Where should I start and what else should I know?
I knew I should have said more…I do love dogs and one reason I am interested in becoming a breeder is because then I can own over 4 dogs (I don’t mean hundreds or anything) but I know I can care better for them than a shelter. But as for the breeding part I mean more like breeding for people that want show dogs and such or for the government (fat chance), but that was my idea, not to put more dog population problems on the earth. Just to clear some things up…

When you breed your dog, you put her at risk

Breeding your dog is a costly event, and you will most probably have more expenses than you will have income from puppies

Regardless of how much experience you have, you can still have disasters

Expect to have a number of sleepless nights

Death of just one pup, even in a large litter, can be heartbreaking. Expect to take some time to get over that too.

No vet is perfect.

It is almost impossible to get a fading puppy to survive, and you can lose a whole litter to fading puppy syndrome.

It is impossible to predict how successful the breeding will be. WOW i think there is enough people breeding dogs, reading that page that is posted, from a contributor.. There are millions of people breeding and over breeding dogs why would you want to put your pets through this… Animals at shelters fall, because someone wants to sell there puppies for astronomical prices, when there are millions waiting for homes daily.. So for what you can put a ad in the paper and hope it goes to a good home, and doesn’t end up being that shelter animal….

What does it take to become a good dog breeder?

February 25, 2010 - 11:28 pm 12 Comments

This won’t be for a LONG time (10+ years) but some day I’d like to breed dogs for show. I’m not entirely sure what dog I’d like to breed, although I am fond of the American Foxhound. When you start to breed, what kind of registration do you have to go through? Should you get your beginning stock from reputable breeders? About how much does it cost to get the pups tested, and at what age should it be done?

Good breeding websites and advice would be great. And, I know most of you are going to post "SPAY AND NEUTER!!!" but that’s not what I’m looking for right now. I do believe in neutering and my dog right now is neutered, but I’m talking about breeding for the welfare of a good type of dog, and for showing.
Yep, how did I know? A Spay and Neuter answer. This is why I’m asking the question: to get information so that when I do get to breeding, I know how to avoid a lot of genetic diseases and look for a good dog. Of course I’m not going to work with this information alone, but it will help. Like I said, I do believe in spaying and neutering, and any dogs that aren’t show quality will in fact be spayed and neutered. I’m not in it to make money, just for my love of the breed.
I don’t know which one to pick. All of them have great advice.

Here’s something you can do for your goal right now: find a reputable, responsible breeder in your area and ask them they’ll teach you. This way you get to see how genes work out in practice instead of theory, what glitches occur even in good lines, how to figure out which dog is okay for breeding and which isn’t, etc. A lot of breeders would probably be happy to teach you.

Good luck, and thanks for wanting to become a responsible breeder!

Bernese Mountain Dog – Berner Sennenhund & puppies

February 23, 2010 - 2:11 am No Comments

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large breed of dog. Is is one of the four breeds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps. The name Sennenhund refers to people called Senn, herders in the Swiss Alps, in the Canton of Berne in Switzerland. Originally kept as general farm dogs, large Sennenhunds in the past were also used as draft animals, pulling carts.
Bernese love to be encouraged with praise and treats. They are sweet with children, despite their great size. Overall, they are stable in temperament, patient, and loving.
They love to lean against people, sit on their feet, or lie down under their legs while people sit.

Featuring a vast array of popular themes, such as the four seasons, water, animals, nature, adventure, travel and destinations … set to music. FILLERS are always nice to look at, often quite amusing, the images can be programmed flexibly.

How do I find a reliable dog breeder?

February 21, 2010 - 11:13 pm 13 Comments

I live in Pennsylvania and unfortunately, a lot of the dog breeders around us are puppy mills. I’m looking for a Yorkieshire Terrier and Maltese mix, female, and a few months old.
Alright than how do I find a reliable dog breeder breeding either a yorkie or a maltese?

Reputable breeder and mixed breed do not belong in the same sentence.

Do your research, and pick ONE of those two breeds. Only then can you go about finding a reputable breeder.

ADD: Ahh, now there is a question I can answer.

Yorkie: http://www.ytca.org/frame_index2.html

Maltese: http://www.americanmaltese.org/ama_breeder_list.htm

Those are breeder lists from both breeds parent clubs. You are going to find the healthiest and best bred dogs here.

what is the best way to impress a dog breeder?

February 19, 2010 - 10:07 pm 11 Comments

What things are breeders looking for in new owners, that make them feel good about selling to them? It’s the first time I bought off the internet,. I am an excellent dog owner, and want to convey that.
any help i’d be grateful for.

Demonstrate your knowledge of the breed, and an understanding of their needs and any problems associated with them..
If you have read a good book on that breed, that will really impress the breeder. I require that all prospects read a certain book about my breed, and if they won’t do it, and are not able to discuss the book with me, they don’t get a puppy.

If the breeder doesn’t ask you a LOT of questions, steer away from them!
If you feel they are trying to talk you into their puppy, steer away from them!

Is it really worth it to be a full time dog breeder?

February 17, 2010 - 7:05 pm 9 Comments

I always wanted to be a dog breeder but just cant seem to add up all the numbers. It is very expensive to properly care for all the dogs. How do I make profit. Please give me websites or other knowledge you know so I will continue to pursue this dream.

Reputable dog breeders do not make money. They are lucky to just break even. It is okay as a sideline but not as a way to earn a living. believe me, I know.
