What is the biggest dog breed on average and what is the world record dog?

January 27, 2012 - 12:41 am 9 Comments

Basically I’m asking what’s the largest dog breed on average and what is the biggest dog.

Great Dane’s are usually the biggest breed. However, the biggest dog of all time was a mastiff named Hercules who weighed almost 300 pounds.

What dog breed sheds the least and is good for young kids?

My parents are thinking of getting a dog for my 11 and 9 year old bro n sister but my mom wants a dog that doesn’t shed very much we’be had a dog before but it had to be put down after a year due to numerous tumors. I wanted to know what breed of dogs do not shed much and are good with kids / playful?

Well, poodle crosses are really sweet and playful, great with kids and small. My cousin has a little dog which is a mix between a poodle and a Maltese Terrier, and she is very adorable. They have really curly fur, it doesn’t shed at all and they have such a sweet personality.

My cousins dog, Marley, is very playful and energetic. She is really quite calm and loving when in the house, she’ll walk around, like your ankles and sit on your lap. She even falls asleep sometimes! As soon as she sees the lead, she sits for us at the front door and waits, and she is very good on the lead. When she’s in the park, she is very social, runs very fast, loves to run back and forth, but she’s not big enough to pick up a ball! She will bring us back a stick, though.

I have known 5 malti-poo’s in my life, and they have all been the same, very lovely and small, loving and they all adore kids. They can live for up to 10 years. I highly recommend a malti-poo, especially around young children, as they actually don’t shed at all!

What dog breed is good around a lot of people?

November 14, 2011 - 10:37 pm 11 Comments

I have a huge family and my house is full on the weekends with adults and children. I am wondering what dog breed is good with a lot of people around? We are not looking for a dog just yet but i wanted to know if there even was a breed that is better around groups of people, because not only do we always have people over we like to take our dog where ever my family goes. We prefer big dogs but any information would be helpful. Thanks

While say a Golden is more likely to be good than a Shepherd, much of it has to do with early socialization. Get a puppy by 7-8 weeks and get it out around people, crowds, kids, men, women, other ethnic groups, people wearing hats, whatever, and it will do well later.

When selecting a dog, I often say follow your heart. What do you want, a Mastiff, a Lab, an Aussie, a standard Poodle, etc., get it young and start it off right.

What would be the best large dog breed that would be able to get along with several small/toy breeds and cats?
I’m talking about a puppy aged large dog, would one be able to get along, or would most puppies be to aggressive to small animals?
all other pets are friendly, social, and get along.
i was leaning more towards a great dane, would this be a good or bad choice as well?

Golden retriever are the #1 but also sant Bernards and grate Dans believe it or not :-)

What breed is the most lovable, owned and obedient breed of dog?

About my previous post, lots of people said that "the most dangerous dog breed" is still questionable and unknown. That there is no such thing as dangerous since it was only the outcome of the training(or there’s no training at all) done by the owners and pet lovers. So, does that mean that the "most admirable and obedient breed" is also an unproven one?

Genetics sets the core temperament of a dog so not breed specific & the owner shapes behaviors the dog was born predisposed to exhibit with training, leadership, socialization ect which are environmental factors.

As an example if you take my breed of choice, the Dobermann which is typically hard headed, willful, highly intelligent & independently minded, you will see different behavior depending on the attitude of the person on the other end of the lead.

If the dog perceives weakness in the person’s authority over it, it will see what it can get away with. Give the lead to someone who shows firm calm authority, that the dog will respect & be obedient because it cannot get away with errant behavior.

In a nutshell the most admirable dog is subjective & genetics aside, obedience depends on the quality of the training the dog receives.

What is an athletic dog breed thats good of leash?

July 21, 2011 - 1:38 am 14 Comments

I bike, hike, camp and a lot of other outdoor activities. I am going to adopt my first dog but would like to find a breed/s that would run with me as well as a breed that I could teach to be off leash while doing these activities. I have done a lot of research on dog breeds and have hit a dead end. So if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it!

Australian Shepherd
Labrador Retriever
Golden Retriever
Shetland Sheepdog
Boxer
Smooth Collie

These are a few dogs that pop into my mind when I see an active person who want their first dog. There are other breeds that excel at obedience, like German Shepherds, the Belgian Breeds, and Doberman Pinschers, but are not for first time owners or inexperienced owners.

What is the best breed of dog that fits in to a small farm setting?

May 11, 2011 - 5:59 am 5 Comments

I am looking for a new dog for my mothers farm. Because we have lots of small animals, chickens, ducks, and cats, it’s really hard to find a dog breed that will fit in. We already have a beagle and a border collie, and are looking for something new. They are getting older and we need some younger blood to replace them. If you have any ideas, please let me know.

My favorite working dog is a German Shepherd. You do have to sometimes teach them to not try to herd. If they are too bored they will herd children, chickens or cats. My grandmothers senior GS saved me from being bitten by a big coiled rattle snake. when I was four years old, by firmly holding on to the back of my dress. My angry screaming at him brought family running to see why I was throwing a fit.

Why is it necessary to register a dog breed?

April 25, 2011 - 12:40 pm 7 Comments

Is there any significance? What are the advantages if a certain dog breed is registered? Are there any disadvantages if a dog breed is not registered?

Breeders register their dogs showing the purity of the breed, however as a pet owner that has no intention of breeding nor showing, registration is not at all necessary.

What medium to large breed dog would you recommend?

What dog breed would you recommend that is very playful and affectionate?
Nothing that requires too much grooming, but long fur is still ok.
Also a breed that doesn’t have many major health concerns.
Our family has had about 3 golden retrievers that have been awesome dogs, but one had a tumor and another had seizures. I know you can’t always predict things like that, but I just want a semi-large dog that doesn’t have a bunch of health issues.

Black Labs have a really great disposition. Generally are healthy breeds, but have a very high level of energy. You will need to give it lots of exercise and mind the things in the house because they do love to chew.

What breed of dog will go along with a male Chihuahua?

April 10, 2011 - 4:50 am 7 Comments

I’m planning to adopt a new dog, but I already have a 5 month old male Chihuahua. I want bigger breed. Can you give me a list of dog breeds that will go along with my male Chihuahua?

Toy breeds. Chihuahuas will try to attack bigger dogs, small dog syndrome. If you get another placid toy breed, they will not feel threatened & should get along easier. Speak with the shelter staff about your concerns & they will give you their recommendations based on the dogs already available for adoption, as opposed to a general breed.
