Do you know how would a Half St. Bernard Half Boxer dog will look like?

March 24, 2010 - 12:25 am 10 Comments

By next week someone is sending me a gift of a half saint bernard half boxer dog. He is one month old. Did you ever see something like that? Would he be cute?

you are accepting a gift of a dog you never saw before and you are getting the dog at 5 weeks? you dont know much about dogs then I take it.
The pup should be at least 8 weeks and I would not accept the pup until then. Tell the owners that its not right to take the pup away so soon.

Please have the owners send a picture so at least you are familar with the dog. You should be the one picking out the puppy for yourself. Yikes I see disaster in the air for you and the dog.
Here is one pic I found of one on Petfinder
http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=12320179
they dont always look like this it will depend which of the genes the pup got.

I am thinking of buying a X breed boxer dog?

As a first pet I have been looking at boxer dogs as they are great family pets, have come across one that is crossed with a greyhound, but it does have more traits from the boxer appearence wise, anyone with info on cross breeds? Is it wiser to buy just a pure pedigree boxer?

Mixed breed = mixed bag

No way to know for sure, but greyhounds make good family pets too so you might as well give the mix a shot. Provided the mix is from a shelter and you aren’t paying some backyard breeder for the dog

What is the best way to buy a Boxer (dog)? (Through breeders, classifieds, etc…?)?

March 19, 2010 - 6:21 pm 8 Comments

I want to buy a Boxer, but I want my dog to be pure and healthy….what is the best way to find it?

Find a responsible breeder. A responsible breeder will:

1) be breeding to the breed’s standard..no teacup, micro, mini, imperial,
king, or other goofy term for runts or oversized dogs. No intentional
"rare", meaning unaccepted by the breed standard, colors either.

2) will be actively showing or working the parents.

3) will have genetic health testing done, such as OFA or PennHip, CERF,
VonWillebrand’s, etc.

4) will give you the results of that testing in writing

5) insists on spay/neuter for pet pups.

6) has a contract citing the spay/neuter clause and also offering to take
back the pup at any time for any reason for the rest of its life.

7) is open, honest, and available to the new owner, and can talk aobut their
breed for hours.

8) does a home check before placing a pup, and will turn down homes that
might not be suitable for a pup of their breed.

9) does not put money above the well-being of their animals.

If the breeder you are considering doesn’t fit these guidelines, find a
better breeder. You are more likely to get a mentally and physically
healthier pup from a responsible breeder.

Look for dog shows in your area, and contact teh nearest boxer club in your area for referrals. Also look at www.akc.org to learn more about finding responsible breeders.

How tall does a boxer dog get compared to other breeds?

March 17, 2010 - 8:23 pm 6 Comments

I have a 6-month old boxer dog. I think she’s quite small for her age. I would like her to be at least as tall as a german shepard.

Is this normal or is she undergrown?

Boxers, especially female boxers, are not usually as tall as German shepherds. At 6 months she’s not close to full grown.

My boxer dog is having problems. Do you know what i could do?

March 15, 2010 - 10:23 pm 10 Comments

So my dog is of the boxer breed and he is pretty old for a boxer. His name is Bruno and he’s 11. Anyway so his back half is starting to not work so well and he falls sorta and slips when walking. we have taken him to the vet and the doctor said that happens where the back half gets paralyzed but the mind and everything stays good. i was just wondering if any other owners have had this problem and if they know anything i can do to help him.

Hi there!

Sorry to hear about your boxer. I just want to offer you some ideas that might help his joints/stiffness issues.

1. Fish liver oil. You can get this in capsule form, my dogs think it is a treat. It helps to lubricate the joints, making them move easier (like oiling a squeaky hinge)

2. Glucosamine/Condroitin/MSM supplement. There is one called Cosequin made especially for dogs. These ingredients help arthritic joints or anything with inflammation. For example, the type of paralysis he is experiencing can be caused by a pinched nerve in his lower back. If this is the case, the pinched nerve is a result of inflammation (swelling) in that specific area. Reducing that swelling will help "unpinch" the nerve, so to speak.

3. Massage. This sounds sorta silly, but animals like massage as much as people do. I massage my boxers’ hips and legs. Keeps them loose, and less prone to injury.

4. make sure he drinks a ton of fresh water, and GOOD wholesome food (no corn or animal by-products).

Good luck! May your dog live a much longer life. We just had to put one of our boxers down, she was almost 14 years old. The average boxer’s lifespan is 10-12 years and it sounds like your guy has lived a pretty good life! Make his last few years good as well!

p.s. with today’s turbulent economy, I want to mention that the supplements I listed above are not very expensive. So don’t let that be hesitation in you trying them out. AND… if by chance it is a totally different thing wrong with your boxer, giving him those supplements will not harm him in any way.

How much dose it cost to fence a yard for a boxer dog?

March 14, 2010 - 1:38 am 3 Comments

how much money would it cost to fence a yard for a dog like a boxer because i really won’t a boxer and i don’t want to pay thousands

Depends on how big your yard is and what type of fence you want. I only know one person who owns a boxer, and it was very prone to escaping, so you would probably need a 6′ tall fence, and be ready to put cement along the bottom to keep the dog from digging out, too. You would be looking at least a few hundred to fence the yard. However, boxers are very social dogs, and would be much happier inside the house with you most of the time. If you leave it outside all the time, it will be very unhappy and probably have behavior problems.
