Anyone pregnant or have children with a Boxer dog?

March 9, 2010 - 10:14 pm 7 Comments

I’m 14 weeks pregnant and we have a 65lb all muscle Boxer Female who will be almost 2 when the baby comes. She is a VERY energetic dog and I’m just concerned with her excited behavior once the baby comes. She’s wonderful with my nieces and nephews who are all over 2 years of age – but I’m concerned with a newborn and the first 2 years. Anyone have a boxer and babies? Tell me your experiences and challenges you’ve faced.

I have two boxers who are now 6 and 8 years old. TRUST ME, a boxer is one of the BEST dogs you can have around your children! My sister lived with us for a while, and at the time, she had a newborn and a 2 year old. They were wonderful with her kids and let them crawl on them and tug at their ears…they just licked them!

Your boxer is at that age where she’s JUST starting to get out of the puppy stage. Boxers take a long time to mature, and this stage could last a year or more. BE PATIENT!

Boxers are very intelligent, and when ours would sniff or go near the newborn, we would just watch closely. If they tried to lick him, only a quick "no no" and they would back off. Of course she’s going to be interested in the new addition. Let her sniff the baby and get used to it. You’ll find that that dog will become your baby’s #1 protector. Moreso than you even.

You’re in for a real treat. I cannot reiterate enough how wonderful boxers are with children. You have nothing to worry about. Enjoy it!

I don’t but friends of mine do. Their boxer is about 3-4 years old (I think) and their daughter is 2. They had the dog since it was a puppy and the dog is absolutly wonderful with their daughter. She follows him around, pulls his ears and tail, plays with him…..and their boxer is very very gentle….Has never hurt or snapped at her!

My best friend has two full blooded boxers, a 15 month old female and a 4 year old male, and some random mutt. She’s just now pregnant, but has no plans to get rid of the dogs.

They’ve been around my nephew who is 21 months plenty of times, certainly before he was standing and walking. The first time I saw them together, I was a little worried since as you know, boxers are so crazy energetic. They do kind of jump on him, but he just sits there and laughs. He loves those dogs! I’ve seen him stick his fingers in their eyes with no consequence. His yard is right behind my friend’s house and when both he and the dogs are outside, he’ll reach through the fence to mess with them. They are totally fine with it.

In all honesty, the only animal that has injured him thus far is one of his parents’ cats. He played to rough and got bit.

I would not worry about it, i have a boxer mix and she is wonderful with everything and everyone.
I got her when my son was only three or four months old. She is very energetic these days and is almost two (so is my son). She slows down when she is near him and will let him crawl on her back or do anything to her really. I am also pregnant, but am not worried. if your dog is anyting like mine you will be fine.

I don’t have a boxer but I do have a jack russell that lives inside. Granted she is alot smaller than your dog, but boy does she have energy. I have researched introducing the dog to a new baby.
As long as the dog is well trained and you don’t leave them alone together, you should be fine.
Whenever I can’t watch the baby and the dog together closely, I will be keeping the dog in her kennel.
    Currently 19 weeks!

I have a all muscle boxer female who just turned 2 on 10/28/08. She is very energetic. When she was around a 6 month old baby, she was very calm and laid down next to the baby. At one point a friend of the family came in and was drunk, our boxer wouldnt allow him around the baby. When the friend didnt smell like alcohol, our boxer didnt have a problem with him being around the baby. When shes around 2 years +, she is still very calm but has the occasional wiggle worm :) . Boxers are very good dogs and learn very quickly, just be patient.
