How to start on dog conformation handling without purchasing a show dog?

March 29, 2010 - 10:29 pm 2 Comments

I live in my parents’ home, and they do not like dogs in their home. I have always wanted to start dog showing, but am not able to get a show dog myself. What are ways to participate in conformation showing without purchasing a show dog? (How to find someone to allow me handle their dog if they don’t even know me) I can’t get into junior handling since I am over the age limit.

go to a few dog shows and talk to the owners/handlers and talk to them about getting started in handling. this would also be a good expierence to get used to the set ups of shows and also to see how others handle the dogs.

Why does my Maltese dog tremble when he is laying down?

March 29, 2010 - 10:29 pm 3 Comments

My Maltese is 11 years old, and he trembles sometimes when he is laying down. It doesn’t last long and it is not a continual tremble. It is every few seconds. Then it just stops. Is this something I should be worried about? It is almost like he does it as he is drifting off to sleep, because the moment he opens his eyes it stops. Please help me. I would die if something happened to him.

I don’t think it is anything to be concerned about, my maltese and bichon both do this sometimes before falling asleep or during sleep. Once they are awake they are fine.

is it all right to use anti-bark dog collar to puppy?

March 29, 2010 - 10:29 pm 12 Comments

i have a 5+ months puppy, whenever i leave the house, she will bark non-stop for more than 15 minutes, what can i do to stop her for barking if anti-bark dog collar is not suitable for puppies?

Absolutely not.. While I have nothing against shock collars, I do not feel using it on a puppy is appropriate at all.

Nothing can take the place of good old fashioned training. Use a shake can when he barks and tell him SHH or quiet.. Do not yell at him to shut up as he see’s it as you barking back.

He is the perfect age for puppy training classes

Are there any Boxer dog groups in Denham Springs, LA?

March 28, 2010 - 12:30 am 3 Comments

I am very interested in finding out if there are any Boxer dog groups in the Denham Springs area. If not, maybe just a general dog group? Thanks!

Try petfinder.com. It can direct you to local dog groups in your area. If not for boxers, maybe another breed. Or one of the many rescue groups in your area can direct you to the group you are looking for. Good luck

Whats the difference between dog treats and regular dog food?

March 28, 2010 - 12:30 am 6 Comments

More specifically, whats in dog treats thats so different from regular dog food, and makes dogs freak over their treats? Why isnt this just added to regular dog food to make it more appealing to dogs, not that it really matters?

Nothing is different in most, they are cheaply made, most are very high in fat content and have very high ‘flavourings’ in them…not really good food for dogs, but because they are different and are given as a treat they become high value to the dog………….if you fed a bowl of treats a day, they would lose that high value and they certainly wouldn’t give the nutrients required, make your dog fat and un healthy
