What does it mean when a dog licks another dog under the chin?

February 25, 2010 - 11:29 pm 3 Comments

I’m taking care of some family’s dogs for the week, but I only own one dog. My dog always seems very aggressive towards other dogs, but they seem to be getting along alright. My dog is always trying to lick under the chin of one of the other dogs, and that dog doesn’t seem to like it much. Is that some type of communication, and if yes, what does it mean?

Also…since I’ve got you here :) … my dog keeps taking the toys aways from that particular dog. If the one dog starts playing by himself with a toy, or if they start a game of tug of war, my dog starts growling and takes the toy away. Is that how dogs normally play, or is my dog being a bit selfish?

Licking the face/mouth is submission to the other dog, most domimate dogs don’t like it much and will growl and show agression. its what puppies do to mom wolves to invoke… hmm well feeding…. it makes them up chuck food for the pups. older dogs who do this to an alpha is corrected by a growl or just a show of teeth. it also mean ur dog is a bit insecure.
note how the other dog is standing his chest out, head high, tail up. he’s holding his ground, this is a dog that starts a fight with others that want to fight. but ur dog is saying i want to be friends….u are boss. i would correct the aggresser. a light touch on the shoulder or neck. and be sure the dog walks away not u.
taking toys is a normal play at my house, it involes growling and barking…and running around like crazy dogs they chase and play tug o war. but i stop play when it goes beyond playing to being slightly aggressive. i can hear the change of tone in the dogs… a growl deepens to a snarl…and a bark changes to that deep growlish bark. that is like when someone is at the door. they stand differ..like i said above….their brother and have been together their whole lives.

but i can’t see if ur dogs are playing..or if they mean business.

Are airedale terriers good with other dogs? Specifically the Maltese dog breed.?

February 25, 2010 - 11:29 pm 3 Comments

I am house sitting/babysitting an Airedale terrier and I know nothing about this dog breed. I have a Maltese but he can live with my parents for the week. However, I wanted to know if I introduced the 2 dogs how would the airedale terrier treat my maltese?

Depends on the specific dogs involved and less on their breeds. Introduce them on neutral territory (which neither sees as their own) and see how they do. As with any small dog/large dog pairing, make sure they aren’t left alone together unsupervised as serious injury could result for the smaller dog, even in play.

what is the voltage and ampage of a dog collar?

February 25, 2010 - 11:28 pm 3 Comments

hey, i wont actually use this on my dog, its for me…go youtube! he he… So i was wondering what the voltage of a dog collar is.

if it’s about the dog collar that gives an electric shock when you press the ‘button’ then expect a couple of 1000V, but the amperage (number of electrons that run through your body) is really low. This depends highly on the resistance if the skin aswell, this is because the amouth of energy is really low,

So you will feel it, but it will not really harm you unless used for an extended time of-course. If you use it for an extended time your brain will get crazy because it doesn’t understand what to do with that feeling, I assume….

My Dad told us to not feed the dog for a few days. Will this affect the dog health?

Dad got mad at the dog, and he wants to teach him a lesson.

wtf…your dad should not own a dog. That is just cruel. What an ass…no offense.

What does it take to become a good dog breeder?

February 25, 2010 - 11:28 pm 12 Comments

This won’t be for a LONG time (10+ years) but some day I’d like to breed dogs for show. I’m not entirely sure what dog I’d like to breed, although I am fond of the American Foxhound. When you start to breed, what kind of registration do you have to go through? Should you get your beginning stock from reputable breeders? About how much does it cost to get the pups tested, and at what age should it be done?

Good breeding websites and advice would be great. And, I know most of you are going to post "SPAY AND NEUTER!!!" but that’s not what I’m looking for right now. I do believe in neutering and my dog right now is neutered, but I’m talking about breeding for the welfare of a good type of dog, and for showing.
Yep, how did I know? A Spay and Neuter answer. This is why I’m asking the question: to get information so that when I do get to breeding, I know how to avoid a lot of genetic diseases and look for a good dog. Of course I’m not going to work with this information alone, but it will help. Like I said, I do believe in spaying and neutering, and any dogs that aren’t show quality will in fact be spayed and neutered. I’m not in it to make money, just for my love of the breed.
I don’t know which one to pick. All of them have great advice.

Here’s something you can do for your goal right now: find a reputable, responsible breeder in your area and ask them they’ll teach you. This way you get to see how genes work out in practice instead of theory, what glitches occur even in good lines, how to figure out which dog is okay for breeding and which isn’t, etc. A lot of breeders would probably be happy to teach you.

Good luck, and thanks for wanting to become a responsible breeder!

Can someone please give me a list of dog breeds most likely to bite?

And a list of dog breeds least likely to bite?

Thank you!
I know that its about trainnig not breed. Im not looking for that. All I want is a list of which breeds have the most bite reports.
Im not asking for personal dog reason. My puppy is lovely. Its just pretty much a research question.

Chow Chows are one-person dogs that tend to bite without any warning. They are also a bit ferocious around strangers, and can be quite a tenacious fighter. So make sure to discipline this dog and set right from wrong, immediately.
The Papillon is fiercely loyal of their owners – to a fault. They can be quite possessive and standoffish to strangers.
Old English Sheepdogs are very protective of their owners so they might be aggressive if anybody tends to be too close to its owners.
A Llasa Apso often gets cranky around kids.
Rottweilers are extremely protective of their masters.
Chihuahuas aren’t too fond of kids. They’d rather be with adults than play around with tots.
Toy Poodles bite people and other animals out of self defense. Unfortunately, ‘playing’ according to you may be perceived as a form of ‘attack’ to them.
Dachshunds aren’t known for their patience.
Jack Russell Terriers are feisty creatures who require early training to prevent long-term biting and digging problems.
Giant Schnauzers are very dominant. They often challenge adults, particularly strangers.
Cocker Spaniels often suffer from a dangerous genetic disease known as "rage syndrome." This syndrome causes spontaneous violent action against not strangers, but actual family members. Many Spaniels have been put down because of this unwanted behavior. Check with the breeder to ensure your Spaniel is free from this dangerous dog disease.
The Pekingese isn’t all that tolerant of strangers.
Miniature Pinschers usually have aggression issues because they’ve got this "big dog-little body" mind set going on.
Here’s a rundown of breeds that are typically gentle but can’t shake off their "bad dog" image.

Boxers are pretty good with kids. They are good watchdogs, but will only become aggressive
Bulldogs are very playful and gentle.
Great Danes, while considerable in size, happen to be kind and affectionate.
Mastiffs are especially quiet and docile.
German Shepherds are great with kids too. These are courageous, fiercely loyal dogs who, if trained properly, will be extremely gentle to family and guests.
Rottweilers are also capable of tenderness and affection. They have a bad rep, but if they trust you, you’ll never have to worry.

What dog breed looks like a Beagle but acts like a King Charles Spaniel?

February 25, 2010 - 11:27 pm 4 Comments

I’m looking for the perfect dog breed for me. My boyfriend doesn’t want a breed that looks to girly. We want a nice relaxed, small-medium sized dog that’s calm and friendly. Any ideas of breeds with temperments like a King Charles Spaniel, but looks a bit more like a Beagle?

Have you considered going to your local rescue centre and seeing what’s available there? There’s loads of great dogs of all ages, sizes, breeds/mixes.

I’m sure if you have a look around a few centres you’ll find something that appeals to both you and your boyfriend.

When i wake up in the morning, we find wet patches on our floor. Is it our 10 year old boxer dog?

February 24, 2010 - 12:23 am 7 Comments

Every time in the morning when i go down stairs, we find a wet patch on the floor and it has no ordure. We have a 10 year old Boxer Dog and he seems to be drinking Allot at the moment. Would you say this is him? I am getting abit worried about this.

It sounds like it’s the dog. Take to Vet’s to see if it has a urinary tract infection. Or, because of age, it’s internal organs could be shutting down.

DOG???????????????????????

How to teach a 2 month Maltese dog tricks.?

February 24, 2010 - 12:23 am 6 Comments

Have a 2 month Maltese dogs. I got him like 4 days ago. He doesn’t respond to his name and does not know any tricks. How can I teach him to respond to his name and do tricks. As well how do I keep him from smelling bad?
I have had 3 dogs before this one. 1 ded an the other two are still alive and I have had them for 10 year so I know how to take care of dogs.

At 8 weeks old your puppy’s attention span is short so start with bits of food then using his new name say come. when he comes give him a treat. Always reward when he does the right thing. always wait for him to do the right thing it may take awhile.
Go to your library and check out all the dog training books, read them all pick out the easiest ones and get to work this pups not going to raise and train itself.
Good luck and start reading, an watching victoria stillwell on animal planet she’s good. they’re all good, you just need to pick which method of training works best with you and your dog.
