How to select a dog breeder?

January 29, 2010 - 10:11 pm 4 Comments

Hi, i am looking for our first dog and would appreciate any tips for selecting a breeder, also, what does it mean by "backyard breeders"?
Thanks

Backyard breeders won’t really bother to ask you questions or have you meet their dogs or anything. They are in it for the money, don’t show or do anything with their dogs, and don’t do health screening or checks, etc.

Breeders that you want to get a puppy from will have you fill out a questionnaire, come to meet them and the puppies, they will show their dogs, be very knowledgeable about their breed and answer your questions. They should also have a registered kennel name and be a part of a club like the CKC or AKC.

Does anyone know any good/reliable dog breeders?

I live in Cambridge (south-east of England) and wanted to know if there are any good/reliable dog breeders near by. I’m hoping to get either a cocker spaniel or a golden retriever.

These guys may be able to help you! They’ll know the good breeders. Cockers can be vicious and dogs that are bred for temperament will be a priority. Give them a call and have a chat.

We used the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of The United Kingdom to find breeders, so breed clubs are the way to go if you want. :)

As for retrievers, I couldn’t find a site but there will be one somewhere!

Good luck, they’re both awesome dogs.

What are some cool dog names that could be human names too?

What is the best dog breed for me?

January 29, 2010 - 10:10 pm 17 Comments

I work regular hours M-F. My daughter comes home around 3:30 so the dog would be by itself during that time. I like to run, be outside and go to the dog park. I would love to have a dog I could take everywhere. I want a dog to do those things with but also that will lay around at home too and not be all hyper all the time. Also, I dont want a dog that sheds a lot. I would love to have the dog inside and eventually, after training, have the run of the house all day. My thoughts on the breed are maybe labs, dobemarn, any bird dog types or maybe a mut from the pound??? Any suggestions?

Go to the pound. You can probably find a young dog that has all the qualities you are looking for and has been housetrained already. Added bonus is that it will have all of its shots up to date and you will have a better idea of its temperment.
