I really want to get a maltese puppy, I’m aware that they are a house dog & of their grooming requirements, I’m just curious if they can be left alone during the day as my partner and I both work full time, and if so, should they be left inside or out? I live in Ireland so summer and winter are mild, but can be wet. We will be with the puppy for the first few weeks as we have arranged to be off work. Can anyone help?!

Yes, it can. If you leave her outside, she should have a little dog house to go into in case it rains. Leave toys and raw hides outside to keep her busy. Another dog would also be a good idea, so shes not lonely while your gone.
If you can’t afford the price of another Maltese, there are many small mixed dogs out there that need homes, that have already been trained.

Please also keep in mind that the invisible fence does not stop strays , humans or wildlife from entering your yard and hurting your dogs. I don’t know what breed of dog you have but the invisible fence does not work for most terrier breeds. Any terrier worthy of his title of terrier will gladly take the shock to get to a squirrel or other critter but they will not take a shock to come back into the yard.

Check all the pros and cons before you invest.

I purchased a package of large rawhide bones at Costco last week. My 9 mo old German Shepherd really likes chewing on the one he focused on so far. I guess he ingests some of it. Are they bad for a dogs health?. My brother is telling me they are.

Rawhides aren’t digestible and are responsible for a number of intestinal blockages every year. Some requiring surgery.

Plus they are sold as being good for your dogs teeth, but in reality they aren’t. They leave a plaque forming film on the dogs teeth.

Add to that, that many of these products are treated with some pretty nasty chemicals.

Toss the rawhides, go with bully sticks, stuffed kongs, or even some raw meaty bones for chewies. My two LOVE chicken feet to chew on. Good for the teeth, fully digestible, and contain glucosomine.

I have been doing some research for a new dog. I love the japanese breeds. The akitas are gorgeous, but I do not think I’d have the time to train one (I hear they require quite a bit of training). I’ve read about the Ainu breed, aka Hokkaido. From all that I’ve read, this seems like a very well balanced dog. I’d like to talk to a US breeder to learn more.

The Ainu is a Japanese spitz breed that is rarely seen outside of Japan. When loved and cared for, the Ainu Dog is obedient to his master and a great friend.

I want a small dog for Christmas, that is of course a puppy when I get it. Anyway from what I tell you, what small dog would fit me best?

I like dogs that would like me best, but still be friendly to other people. Like a one person dog.

It seems like a great breed for you would be the West-Highland terrier. This breed packs a lot of energy but are very obedient dogs as well. It seems like an almost perfect fit for your lifestyle and the dogs as well. Good Luck!
