What toy breed dog would be good to get for a beginner dog owner who is afraid of dogs and their bark?

October 30, 2009 - 6:48 pm 3 Comments

I get scared when larger breed dogs growl or bark.
I got attacked by a corgi before and certain breeds make me nervous, but the breeds that I like are : Maltese, poodles, schnauzers, pugs and miniature mutts.

Also, due to a mild allergy, dogs with coarse hair like labs tend to make my skin itch. Yet, poodles and cavalier king Charles spaniels and those breeds mentioned above didn’t make me itch.

A dog would give me an excuse to walk around and not look weird, especially when I go too close to people w/dogs.

small dogs do tend to bark much more, especially when they’re young. A good idea for you may be to adopt an older dog (of a breed that you’re not afraid of and doesn’t make you itch) who’s out of the excitable, snappy, puppy stages and is a little bit more calm. This doesn’t necessarily mean an old dog, but I reccomend one who’s at least about two years old. There are many, many of these types of dogs in animals shelters because so many people always want a puppy that they forget that the ones who are a little older still need good homes too.

I think this would be a good idea for you becase it’s easier to judge the personality of an adult dog than a puppy, and this way you would have the best chance of choosing one who could be a good friend to you and meet your needs well. If you’re looking for a small dog, they tend to have a much longer lifespan than larger dogs (I’ve known several toy dogs who are 15+ years) so you don’t need to worry that choosing one who’s not a little puppy wil make your time with him or her too short.

Good luck!

How long will a 5 pound yorkie/maltese dog live? Also, what is the best food for this type of dog?

October 30, 2009 - 6:48 pm 2 Comments

Hi. I have an almost one year old yorkie/maltese mix dog that is under 5 pounds. I was wondering what the average life span is.
Also, currently I feed Coco Eukanuba for puppies of a small breed. I’m not sure if I should keep her on this for adult food or continue with the brand. She probably gets bored with it and maybe a food change would make her happy.
I want the best option to keep her happy and healthy.

I have one more question: Soon, I am getting another puppy (of the same breed and gender). Can I feed my one year old dog the same food as the puppy? I heard somewhere that they can have "puppy" food for up to two years… is this true?

Thank you so much for looking at my question and I appreciate all responses!

Kendra, your dog will live as long as someone doesn’t step on it. HA! Only joking. Your pup has to be the cuttest little thing. Small dogs have a long life expedency compared with the normal life span of 10 to 15 years in most other breeds of normal/average size dogs. Dry food is best. Read on the bag when you are to switch to adult food. Don’t worry about the dog getting bored with her diet. She will have fewer digestive issues with the same food every day. You can also make her food yourself. Had a friend that rescued a Yorkie and nursed him back to health by cooking for him. He got dog food mixed in but also cooked chicken, brown rice, carrots, onions, all chopped up and cooked. Plus she put in powered vitamins. Whatever she did that dog looked wonderful and lived to be over 15. He had been so neglected he hardly had any fur and most of his teeth had to be removed. His fur came in beautiful and was a wonderful pet that everyone loved. I loved dog sitting when she would go out of town. He would come sleep on my head at night. Too cute.
P.S. Very pleased on you getting another dog. They are so much happier with a bud around.

Where to get a heavy duty dog collar?

October 30, 2009 - 6:48 pm 4 Comments

I have a huge outside dog and he breaks EVERY collar out there. He actually snaps the metal. He will not stay inside the house for more than an hour and demands to go back out. Every time he breaks his collar, the neighbors call the dog catcher and I ‘m facing fines.

You should pay a visit to a leather worker they
tend to make all kinds of things like belts, whips,
dog collars for pig hunting . So I’m sure they
will make Heavy duty dog collar out of quality
Leather and make it to your dogs measurements.

Or try buying one from a Hunting shop, I own a
Pit bull and although she is quite old she stills pulls
very hard on the leash while walking, so I bought
her a Pig Hunting Vest that looks great ,made from
Kevlar and doesn’t choke her like a regular Collar
around the neck, also the leash connects to both
sides of the shoulders so it has better support for
myself and my Dog..

Do you think dog health insurance is a good idea?

October 30, 2009 - 6:48 pm 3 Comments

I just got a puppy recently and I heard about doggie health insurance. I’m debating whether or not to get it; my boyfriend doesn’t want to. But I think it’s a good idea if it doesn’t cost to much. Any other opinions?

I think its a great idea and im in the midst of looking at various policies. It is a lot pricer than i hoped but i guess it should pay for itself if anything should happen to my dog.

Here’s some of the sites ive visited:

My Dad wants to become a dog breeder what is there to know?

October 30, 2009 - 6:47 pm 17 Comments

My dad wants to become a dog breeder, for bulldogs (englsih) and i was thinking do we need anything? And is there anything we need to know? If there is like what? Plz help!
Also just to let you know that he was just THINKING about it!!! thanks for your help.

Okay, FIRST and most important.. does you dad want to do this to make money? If the answer is yes, then stop right there. You should not become breeders. Breeding is about finding the best traits of that breed and trying to perfect them. When people are breeding right, they will rarely, if ever, make money. More often, they lose money.

If you got past that, you should contact someone who is a reliable, reputable breeder and observe what they do, take their advice, learn ALL ABOUT THE BREED. EVERYTHING. Every trait, all of the dogs genetic backgrounds, everything!

Where can I find dog breeders in the New Orleans area?

October 30, 2009 - 6:47 pm 4 Comments

I am finally getting a dog (Yay!) and i really want to get it from a breeder. I’d rather pick it up than have it shipped from across the country. I am not sure of what breed i want yet. I just want something that is over 10 pounds and a decent size. (i don’t want to be able to step on it.) Please recommend some New Orleans area breeders. Thanks :D

what other dog breeds do maltese get along with?

October 30, 2009 - 6:47 pm 4 Comments

I have a two month old maltese puppy but we have to leave him in our garage for long periods of time. I am worried he is bored and will become neglected, so I wish to buy him a friend, preferably another dog. What dog breeds get along well with a maltese?
my parents refuse to allow the dogs inside, but we are planning to build them a small "dog" home.

with socialization any dog can get along. although I would go with a breed that is around the same size just to be on the safe side. I hope your garage is heated though so your dog is not cold, if you get two dogs will they be aloud to stay in the house? just make sure that your dogs are well taken care of and can’t get into anything please(in a garage they can get into ALOT)

EDIT: Does your dog EVER come in the house? If not, than you really shouldn’t get another dog, you should find your little dog a home were he can come in and have human contact, a Maltese is a breed that likes to be around humans, they are not a solitary breed, no dog is that is why they live in packs. Please do do the right thing by your dog, at two months your dog needs socialization not isolation.

What dog breed would you suggest for a first time dog owner with young children. I was thing labrador?

October 30, 2009 - 6:47 pm 35 Comments

I am 24 and my husband is 25. I stay at home so have plenty of time to walk/look after the dog. We have two young children. A son of 13 months and a daughter of 4. Neither of us have ever owned a dog before so what breed would u suggest? We don’t want a mongrel and are going to buy it from a reputable breeder.

My advice? Do NOT get a puppy. Way too much work, and your children are too young.

Go to your local shelter, and find a dog that is already trained, and is great with kids.

First-time dog owners + young children + puppy = disaster.
