How much water should a adult boxer dog drink per day?

September 27, 2009 - 3:09 am 7 Comments

My Male 2 year old boxer dog weighs 34kg. He has a problem with drinking water and will only drink when he has exercised mostly. He passes strong urine if not encouraged to drink and I sometimes use a syringe to get 130mls into him.

you need to take him to the vets if he doesnt start drinking more
most dogs dont drink loads anyway, but some times it can help by putting a little milk into the water as dogs love milk and a little bit isnt bad for them, hope this helps :-)

How can i control my dog when he sees another dog?

September 27, 2009 - 3:09 am 11 Comments

I walk my dog alot. And hes a big dog. And hes good on a leash. I can handle him really good. But i get scared when he sees another dog. He doesnt bark at all. But the other dogs bark at him. Making my dog run. He rips the leash out of my hands and runs toward the dogs. But he never hurts the dogs. But the dogs always hurt him. How do i control him so me and my dog dont get hurt?

First off, get a air compreser thing like a blow horn with out the horn. spray it in his face. eventually, he won’t chase them because he knows he will get punished. Hope this helped. Use a retractable leash. That way you can control him and it is plastic so it won’t rip out of your hands as much.

How to clean a leather dog collar?

September 27, 2009 - 3:09 am 4 Comments

My dog’s collar really smells. We have tried washing and soaking it but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

There is something called saddle soap. It is designed to clean leather. You can buy it where ever any shoe supplies are sold. It is pretty common.

dog + health?

September 27, 2009 - 3:09 am 2 Comments

My dog does not need as much excercise as she used to. She’s inside from 7 a.m to 4:30 p.m and she used to need at least two hours, not continously, of walking before she would go to sleep at 8 p.m. Now all she needs is two thrity minute walks and she’s ready for sleep. She’s been like this for about a month and she’s nearly 7 years old. She is a mixed breed, stocky build but usually high energy dog about 60 pounds. Is this something I should be worried about?

Has your dog been gaining weight? Weight gain can slow down a dog, as can age. As this is a sudden decrease in activity level, you should definately take your dog to the vet. There could be an underlying medical reason she suddenly has less energy.

Other common symptoms to watch for:
- loss of appetite
- external injuries (sprained muscles, sore spots)
- changes in elimination patterns/consistency
- changes in her stool
- changes in her general mood

How much does the average dog breeder make?

September 27, 2009 - 3:09 am 30 Comments

I know that the numbers vary alot due to how many dogs they have, how much they sell them for ect..
But if you are a dog breeder yourself, or you know someone…
How many dogs do you have? And how much do you make annually with your dogs?

I am not a dog breeder, I still have way too much to learn before I try that, but I know many collie breeders. Most of them only have one litter a year.

Before they breed their dogs they have to them tested at their vet. for STD’s. (yes dogs have sexually transmitted diseases too) Which costs $.

Then they have to do progesterone testing, to see when the dog should be bred. (Which means more $ paid to the vet.)

Then they have to pay the Stud fee – Which is usually around $500, but sometimes up to a $1,000.

Then they have the cost of check ups with the vet. to make sure their pregnant dog is healthy and the puppies are doing ok. And they cost of feeding the mom and puppies a high quality dog food to ensure they are all getting proper nutrition.

Then once the puppies are born, they will have to go for eye checks, health checks, and first vaccinations….all of which comes out of the breeder’s pocket.

All of this and then there is no guarantee how many puppies will be born, if any. And none of this is considering the cost in the event of problems which require surgery, etc.

Finally, there is the cost of showing the b*tch and/or stud dog and earning their championship titles. (Reputable breeders wait until their dogs are finished champions before breeding them.)

Most reputable breeders break even on the cost of having a litter, while some may make a small profit. More often they lose money on the litter. The reputable breeders are not breeding to make money. They are breeding to produce their ideal of the breed standard. They have carefully thought out the planned litter, researched the parent’s pedigrees and considered all the potential problems. Most of them will have people on a waiting list for puppies, so they already know their puppies will have good homes. Breeding a litter should never be done without careful planning, as there are just too many dogs and puppies in shelters without homes.

It’s the BYB breeders who have multiple litters and the puppy mills that actually make a profit.

Are most reputable dog breeders more comfortable selling their puppies locally?

September 27, 2009 - 3:09 am 9 Comments

Sure seems like that. It seems that many reputable dog breeders (especially women dog breeders) are very suspicious of out-of-state buyers, but are much more trusting of in-state buyers. Why is that?

Men dog breeders usually don’t seem to be quite as suspicious of out-of-state buyers, and usually seem more reasonable and logical about selling their puppies. Why is that?

Opinions?

Any reputable, responsible breeder will want to meet the person they’re selling their pups to and check them out (Even more then you check them out). IMO, it has nothing to do with Gender.

What dog breeds have a gray undercoat under their top coat?

September 27, 2009 - 3:08 am 2 Comments

My dog is part collie. She has the typical collie red top coat and she has a gray undercoat. I found this out when I had her shaved for the summer. I have never seen this before. What breeds have this gray undercoat?
Are there any others? Her gray is lighter than the liver color of a Weimaraner. Anyone have this with their dog when shaved?

Where did you get her from?? A breeder? A shelter? Pet store?
Does she look like a full-bred collie?
I haven’t researched yet, but it may be possible that this could just be her natural color of the undercoat.
Huskies for example can be black and white in color but the undercoat is usually white to gray.
Keeshonds are a breed that has a gray undercoat, black poms too! I’m sure there are others but I can’t think of them at the moment — when I remember I’ll post again.

dog Breed?

tell me your favourite breed of dog, why an provide a picture! i’m trying to decide what to get. some names for that breed would help too, thanks
Little dogs are very cute, but i prefer larger dogs, and if i got a little one, my dad would tease it to no end, and me too
don’t worry about me and dominating dogs. i’m stubborn as a mule, and i never say die

German shepherds are my favorites.
They’re loyal and intelligent. They are naturally protective of their homes and family and in general they have a great temperment. Plus they look great and can be trained to do almost anything.
Names like Saber, King, Stella, Sheba and Max suit them well.
