Dog / pet health and acclimation certificate?

December 29, 2009 - 8:32 pm No Comments

I plan on taking my dog to NJ by plane from CA. I read that NJ requires a pet health certificate. How much does it usually cost?

Since the temperature will be below 45F, AA requires an acclimation certificate. What’s involved in getting one of these? Will the vet need to put my dog in a refrigerator for a while or what? How will they know that my dog can withstand 20-45F temperatures?

For those in LA, can you recommend a vet for this air travel business?

The vet decides the price. They examine the dog and fill out the certificate. It is at the cost they charge. Usually, the vet can attest to the dogs fitness to travel in the temps needed. If it is a small breed puppy, the vet may not say that it is fit to travel in the mentioned temps. And large, hary coated dogs may not be fit to fly in high temps.
Make an appointment with a vet that can do the certificate and they will have all the answers!!!

How Do I find If my Dog breeder was A back yard breeder or A Professional breeder?

December 29, 2009 - 8:32 pm 17 Comments

For those Who Don’t know A Backyard Breeder Is a breeder who Does not care if the dogs inherit Diseases,Unlike a good one,we Did not get him from a Breeder, But his previous owner,He is a pug,1 year and a half,We know his breeders name,And where hes from.I cant contact her(too young) And my dad wont because He is too lazy
He has papers
He has papers And is Akc registered

You could look on Pug Dog Club of America referral list to if his/her name is on it. http://www.pugs.org/indexbreeder.htm
If it isn’t, the breeder is probably a byb. Is your dog registered in AKC, do you see Champion titles on his parent’s name? If so he/she might be a reputable breeder.

Where can I find American Eskimos/dog breeders in British Columbia?

December 29, 2009 - 8:31 pm 3 Comments

I want to welcome a dog into my family. I live in VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA. I can travel out to Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, etc. but not too far out. Does anyone know any breeders in the area or pet store that sell puppies?

Thanks you.
Emily: Thanks for being a smart-ass. :) You have no idea how much time I have spent online trying to find a place. Asking on here is one of my last resorts… sigh.

NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store!

No respectable breeder will ever sell their puppies to a pet shop; shops get their pups from brokers, who collect them from puppy mills all over the south and midwest and ship them to the cities. This sort of business generally kills half to three-quarters of the puppies. The survivors, of undocumentable parentage and without medical records, have generally never been seen by a veterinarian. The pet shops mission is to sell them for as much as possible while spending as little as possible on them.

This will show you what a puppy mill is like:

Buying a puppy in a pet shop supports puppy mills.

If you want an Eskie pup who can be a member of your family for the next 15+ years, get one from a reputable breeder, a member of the Canadian national breed parent club:

What dog breed is best for apartments?

December 29, 2009 - 8:31 pm 2 Comments

I want a dog but not sure as to what breed I want or really what
breed is best for me and where I’ll live.
I plan to move to Nevada soon and want a puppy that is
okay for apartments ,Though my plan is to take it out for walks daily that also depends on my job but i would like a fairly active dog not one to lazy or to hyper. What is the most a dog can weigh for an apartment?I do prefer a dog more friendly towards others but isn’t that just more training than breed.

Well you have to consider the allowances of the apartment. Most places do not allow any dogs, some it depends on the breeds because insurance companies will not insure an apartment complex depending on the breeds. Also some apartments have weight allowances like dogs under 30 pounds, so get your information as to what the apartment allows first and then go from there. You say puppy, and dog interchangable. It is only 1 hour for each month of age, plus 1 hour for puppies, so a two-month-old puppy can only be alone/hold its potty for 3 hours at the most. If you are working, you have to have a plan as to how to let the puppy potty every two hours. You might need a pet sitter or dog walker, or come home during lunch and breaks if you work close by. You might need family/church friend/neighbor help. Keep in mind that puppies needs tons of training, not just a walk. Puppies also cry and bark if they are left alone when they are first little, so that could be an issue with your neighbors. A dog that is already potty and house trained might be a better choice. No matter what breed, a trained dog is always best. I have dog sat several pugs, and some are a blessing and some are a nightmare, and it all has to do with training. If you do not have a lot of experience with training a dog, I would suggest the sheltie. They are the smartest breed and the easiest to train, but you do have to train them not to bark. Well you have to train all breeds not to bark. All apartment rulees are different, and some charge big deposits and extra rent for dogs, so check into that also.

Is health insurance for a dog really worth it?

December 24, 2009 - 9:02 pm 3 Comments

We have a new puppy, an English mastiff female. While we aren’t ever going to get acupuncture for the dog or anything outlandish, we certainly plan on taking good care of her and giving her reasonable vet care. We got a flier for animal health insurance from Iams. I know there are several plans out there, is there a comparison or review website for me to use for research?

It is not true that once you claim something you can’t claim it again. So long as the incident occurs after your pet is enrolled, it will always be covered.

Check out petinsurancereview.com which is a great third party site with ratings and reviews from actual customers.

Pet insurance is definitely worth the peace of mind if you can’t afford big vet bills. I’d personally recommend to skip out on routine coverage no matter what company you pick. This is because you usually end up paying more through the middle-man than if you were to pay the vet directly for shots and checkups.

I have my dog insured with Trupanion and I really like them. They pay 90% of the bill no matter how big, and they don’t have claim limits. Definitely worth checking out! Also you can get hip dysplasia coverage if you enroll before your puppy turns 1.
Good luck!

Please suggest me a good pet shop or dog breeders ?

December 24, 2009 - 9:01 pm 3 Comments

Can someone please suggest me a good pet shop or dog breeder in Bangalore?
I am looking for any one of the following breeds : -
Labrador retriever
Boxer
English Mastiff
Bull Mastiff
Rottweiler
doberman

No pet shop dogs are good quality – they all come from puppy mills or people who breed dogs for "looks" not health or form. The dogs will have tons of health issues.

If you’re not looking for a specific breed, adopt a dog from a rescue or shelter.

what are some good dog names for a mixed breed?

the dog is 4 months old an is crossed dalmation and beagle but looks more like a labrador. it is light brown and has a cute blotch of white in hid right eye. oh its a male! i was thinking cocoa or twinky. but feel free to give out other names (please…).

i like cocoa since its light brown. you can also call it pierre (i’ve always liked that name for labrador looking dogs!)
